"Loner," Gigi called out. The deputy turned. Gigi held out her flask. "Whisky?"

This time Loner couldn't refuse, and she drank gratefully.

"Kramor... he said something about being in danger. From someone here," Gigi said, lowering her tone. "Do you think he's right?"

Loner handed back the flask. "I trust Kramor with my very life," she said; "but honestly...I never would suspect these men of betraying me. I am going to investigate it though...I suppose...people surprise you..."

Gigi sighed. "He doesn't trust me, he has no reason to... but I didn't sell him out, Loner. You believe me, don't you? I think... you and I understand each other."

Loner laughed bitterly. "I don't know what to believe anymore, honestly. But...no, you're right. You wouldn't betray him any more than I would...would you...I don't know how you know that about me, though..."

"I do regret that," she said. "I had my gun to his sorry head...but he didn't have his guns, and to shoot him down in cold blood would've been murder. I'm no murderer, and I don't relish the idea of spending my life in prison. Trust me, I am not finished with Cheech."

"I said I want to help, Loner, and I will. I've been thinking, and... I may have a way to get to Darkpoet... or Cheech, or whatever his sorry name is. I can't guarantee it will work, but I can't think of any other way. It all depends how convincing my acting is..." she fell silent, thinking.

"What is it?" Loner pressed her.

"Your three Indian friends. They all know. If one of them's a rat... that means he'll know too."

"All right. Tell me what you're thinking, and I'll keep it to myself. No one else will know."

"We already discussed it, he will at least be warned, but I might be able to pull it off. If I... tell him that Kramor broke my heart. That I hate him, and want my revenge on him... and you."

Loner nodded slowly. "Well," she said, "that should be...interesting...you'll have to be very careful. Let me know if I can help out with that deception at all..."

She got up. "I have to get back to town," she said. "Since I'm acting sheriff now, and all...Unless there's anything else you wanted to tell me?..."

"Just... play along with whatever I do in town. I'll explain to Kramor in the morning. And... be careful, deputy... I need someone I can trust to watch my back."

"You can trust me. If I'm able to help you, I will."

As Loner turned to leave, she said, "You...you be careful too."
