"Hmm...doesn't look like there's much we can do about this one Rahg'nuul.
We could rest out here and go back later in the evening, but that could be dangerous, especially for you.
Or we could risk it and head back to Melkior, or at least find a city with a magician capable of identifying this ring."
I shout to our friend guarding the outside of the vault (I forget his name),
"Hey! Do you know of any cities nearby?"

ToDM: Khannon and Rahg'nuul will rest inside the vault until dusk so he can heal further and I can avoid the sun. In the interim, there are a few things I'd like to try and do...
1. somehow communicate this plan to Azhag and recover my grapple plus whatever length of my silk rope remains
2. I'd like to ask Khannon for an opportunity to inspect the Fist artifact and roll a Knowledge: Arcana check of 8+5=13 on it.
3. Take 20 and search this room again.
4. Show Khannon the note of Randall Fleetfingers I found in this room earlier.
"Khannon, maybe this Fleetfingers fellow found the artifact before we arrived. So I suggest we check in on your monastery, then track down Fleetfingers before reporting back to Melkior with just this ram ring. Agree friend?"

Arvall & Cernd-ar
Cernd-ar springs into action behind the retreating cult follower and lodges his flail into his back snapping the spine in two and knocking the wind out of his cries... Cernd-ar looks back at Arvall and the two wonder what they should do before heading back towards the Tavern, that is, if there is still something to be gained from going to the tavern...
ToDM: we are definitely going to loot these 3 bodies and recover the medallions...in particular the 2 of Hextar.
"So elf, to the tavern then? If so, let us be quick of it because I have a ceremony to attend this eve and I need to prepare my disguise".

"Fair enough.
I'd still like to know why we're hunting this artifact, as well as why I should fear the inquisition. We've only been told what to do and I'd like to find out more information for myself, maybe we'll find more answers from other sources than Melkior, like this fleetfingers fellow."
Khannon examines the Fist, "Not sure what this thing is capable of, but if you'd like I can attempt to wear it and test it's capabilities."

Khannon & Rhag'nuul
Khannon shouts to Azhag to see if he knows of any cities. A startle shout comes from Azhag. Within a few moments Azhag's head pops up at the top of the entrance then he slowly lowers himself in with some sort of crude rope & harness made with a bunch of clothes knitted together. He swings himself into the building and is shocked by the sudden shift in gravity.
Azhag barrels into the room in an a comical roll and dust himself off, admiring the inner temple. Meanwhile, Rhag'nuul is taking this time to examine the entire room from top to bottom.
Khannon asks once more about any local towns being in the area.
"Uuuuuhhhh... Yes and no, boss." The Goblin let's out a weak chuckle, "You see, well from looking around while you guys were gone I figured out that we're in Eastern Albion... Gnoll country... "The Badlands". Ever hear of it?"
Khannon and Rhag'nuul look at each other.
"Right. Haven't been around, not to many people leave the western Albion, and for good reason.", the goblin goes on to explain, "Basically, there are a ton of gnollish tribes that inhabit the badlands, see while us greenskins were eventually recruited to work for the Mindflayers in order to behave, and get some bonuses on the side, the gnolls never got the offer." The Goblin wonders if any of this is going to make sense. "Over on this side you have only one piece of "civilization" if you will and it's run by those filthy dark elves, and if you thought regular elves smelled funny, well these ones are just rotten. Basically, they have a giant capital in this wasteland called "Overdark" which is just a giant branch of their original home "Underdark" except above ground. If you're a drow, you're practically royality, first class citizens as long as you follow the strict laws. But if you are anything short of that you are a slave working in the underdark mines and factories."
"So basically, most of the immediate area is going to be savage gnoll tribes, filled with cannibals, demon worship, black magic, foul icons and the like. If we head East we'll pretty much end up being enemy of the state in Overdark straight from the get-go. The only option we would have would be to travel West, it would be a 2-3 day walk with no interruptions, then we'll reach the border. The Orcish tribes at the Albion midlands are all being paid handsomely by the squid monsters back in the capital, so they'll have all the proper accommodations and be heavily fortified."
The goblin shakes his head, "If anyone has to worry, it's probably me. The Gnolls and Orcs have a longstanding blood feud and because of such If we're ambushed by Gnolls I'll be target number one."
You are both amazed at the intense geopolitical status of Albion that you were unaware of until now and the goblin's extensive knowledge of it. You can only assume it's because that according to him Greenskins are at the forefront of the battle lines everyday. Meanwhile, Khannon had a sheltered life in a relatively quiet monastery in the heart of Albion and Rahg'Nuul lived a good portion of his life under the western mountains.
By this time Rahg'nuul has finished his search, he has only discovered one really peculiar set of features. You notice that the eyes of the large angle statue have tear ducts. As if it may be a fountain of some sort. You examine the statue closely and find that the tear ducts actually would lead the water to folds in the clothing which eventually lead to the cupped hands.
After sharing this discovery Rahg'nuul asks Azhag for his grappling hook and silk rope. Azhag goes by the entrance and yanks his makeshift rope a few times, then the rope falls down and he pulls it in. The end of his crude rope is made of your silk rope with the grappling hook still tied in. He hands you the 40 ft rope + crude harness + grappling hook.
Rhag'nuul shows Khannon the note written by Randall Fleetfinger which further irks Khannon being reminded that the vault moves, and wondering how Melkior found the vault. But suddenly Khannon remember that he had some papers as well!
Khannon explains that the letter he could understand mentioned the following facts:
*The statues are a danger, some turn from stone to flesh being mindless monsters.
*Some statues are elaborate traps (Which Ragh'nuul rolls his eyes to)
*There is a "Minotaur" Golem that lumbers about in one of the rooms, deadly but stupid.
*Randall hadn't been able to find the Artifact at this point
*Randall was working for Drow employers, so Randall was either a slave or a Drow himself (according to Azhag's information)
*Randall mentions a festival, this would lead Azhag to believe he was Drow himself since how else could he celebrate any festivals? But he then says "Drow Enslavers" possibly mention to the Festival of Tiamat? This would mean a very unlikely, but possible scenario where Randall was a treasure seeker from Morderhiem that was allowed to let live by the drow assuming that he would earn his freedom as long as he retrieved the artifact for them. Or at least led to believe this, most likely being killed after retrieving the artifact.
*Azhag makes a childish joke, prancing about "Randall has a girlfriend, Randall has a girlfriend..." at the mention of "Katarina". Although that might be his wife.
Khannon then hands Ragh'nuul the remaining two letters, one he couldn't decipher and one that was cover in bloody patches. Rahg'nuul is trained in deciphering script and should be able to make more sense out of it than anyone else in the party...
Will take 20 on both notes, while resting and waiting for the sun to set.
20+8=28 x2
Rhag'nuul mentions the ram ring and Azhag stops dead in his tracks and snaps his head towards you. "May I see this ring?" he says with a twinkle in his eye.
While this is going on Khannon makes his intent clear and places his hand into the metalic "Fist of Kord" which is actually a fully plated mithril arm. But something is amiss, the arm is a heavy dead weight when strapped on. It's nothing you can't handle, but just an inconvience, wasn't mithril supposed to be light-weight? Perhaps the stories where a lie.
The party begins resting and Rhag'nuul deciphers the letters, beginning with the bloodied letter.
"Day 13, Month of the Dragon 42 CA
This dungeon is quiet nauseating, but is a very fun and surreal experience. Not only does the vault itself shift location during the night time, but the interior of the vault itself shifts constantly. The nature of how this works is still shrouded in mystery. All that I have been figure out was that the rooms move in a pattern that has a 6 frame cycle which repeats unerringly. This cycle takes 3 hours in total to complete and has stages of movement set every half hour. This leads me to believe that there are 6 rooms in total, trapped inside an even larger metal deathtrap.
The walls are not friendly, and do not wait for everyone to pass through safely as one of my captors quickly discovered when he didn't pass through the stairwell quick enough. Suffice to say he was crushed from the waist up... But something bizarre happened. While the blood shower covered us, and unfortunately some of these papers, the body of the drow himself dematerialized as his body was taken to a pocket dimension...
Later while exploring the shifting dungeon we came across a split statue of the drow frozen in eternal agony. It's as if the dungeon was immortalizing it's victims within the confines.
It'll take me awhile to find the artifact, but while I'm on the job Mandrake's foul traps hold no sway over this thrill seeker.
Sincerely,
Randall Fleetfingers"
"Day 17, Month of the Dragon 42 CA
Well, just great! I'm not too sure whether to be amused or upset. Perhaps I am annoyed. With the rate that this vault has been taking up I'm surely going to miss the festival. I must succeed, I will propose my undying commitment to Katarina. If any good came of this entire venture it was that I managed to find a small chest hidden in a room that swarmed up with rats, filthy beasts. The rats from the ceiling, the minute I opened the chest. A drow was eaten to death, but I managed to sneak a diamond ring out of the chest before retreating.
It is quite possibly one of the minor magical items that I have found in my expeditions in vaults, but like many of the treasures the ring eludes my understanding. The major reason being that most of these trinkets are activated with "draconic" or "undercommon" phrases or words. Seeing as my beautiful bride to be knows neither I think the ring will serve better as our engagement ring. Little do foolish mages know that the enchantment of love is stronger than any illusion or transformation utterance.
Speaking of magic items, I believe that it's the artifact that powers this entire vault. Only such a creation could power such a place... But indefinitely, could it be that this artifact is a infinite power generator? This could be the most powerful artifact yet...
So I persevered and I did finally figure out how to solve this damned floor... the end was the beginning as they say. While waiting patiently by the stairway we entered from for some sort of clue. The rooms just slid into place! A staircase leading down! The other 2 staircases we encounterred only went up, occasionally lining up to send us back to the entrance as if we weren't worthy.
Anyways, by the time I woke up the drow, since Heaven forbid I traverse below alone, the room shifted and the entrance was lost. So I marked the floor and waited. Eventually a chest appeared but we were not in the mood after the "rodent" chest. We now await to enter the second, and most likely final, floor.
Salutations,
Randall Fleetfingers"

"Hmm, a hidden staircase downward?
Well, it seems that maybe the six shifting rooms are more or less a "Trap" and we really just need to get to this staircase.
I am wounded but I will manage, I am intrigued enough to find this staircase. Shall we go to the area described, Rahg'Nuul?"
Rhag'nuul mentions the ram ring and Azhag stops dead in his tracks and snaps his head towards you. "May I see this ring?" he says with a twinkle in his eye.
"See with your eyes, not your hands," Khannon states, somewhat gruffly. "Do you recognize this ring?"

You swing at the ogre, and your blade misses it's mark. However the orc wastes no time and strikes at the ogre.
14+2+4=20
vs
16 Hit!
11+4=15
The orc swings his axe and cuts the ogre's neck clean open. Blood gushes out from the fatal wound as the ogre drops his club and begins holding it's neck futilely. The ogre's eye's roll back and he stumbles backwards. You jump out of the way as the fiend crashes into the street, shattering the brickwork and leaving a pool of blood in it's demise. By now your vern induced buzz had been pretty much killed.
You look at the crippled Frederick and see him twitch slightly, you scramble on your feet and go towards him. Frederick is in terrible shape, his legs are shattered and shards of bone protrude from the skin. His face has already begun to puff up with only one eye hazily looking about. His right arm is dislocated but still gripping his weapon steadfastly. As you get near you notice he's struggling to say something...
Listen Check.
Arvall & Cernd-ar
Cernd-ar loots the amulets, paying particular reverence to those bearing Hextor's Spiked gauntlet crushing the twin spiked arrows. Meanwhile Arvall checks to see if the crossbow wielder is still alive. He appears to be dead, but considering how unholy this village is he might not stay that way if you stick around...
You take the coins from Cernd-ar and begin placing them in the box, you notice that the coin dedicated to Tiamat looks like the coin you already had in the case. You have 2 Hextors, and 2 Tiamats.
You take out a coin and examine it, you notice that it looks like the the size of 3 gold pieces melted together and you'd assume that's the worth, however they couldn't be used as currency since they are too large and feature symbols on them that make them unable to fit in with regular currency. However, you figure more well to do follower of the faith might give you a better bargaining price and the coins of Tiamat in particular could be sold in the Festival of Tiamat in Morderheim, assuming you want to risk going back there.
You make it to the tavern, the front door is locked and all the windows are closed.
Spot checks
Arvall=1+1=2 FUMBLE
Cernd-ar=17+3=20
The two of you begin to examine the perimeter. Cernd-ar begins to warn Arvall... but then comes the crunch. Arvall looks down at the broken glass he stepped on and then looks at the broken shards that have imbedded themselves in his shoe.
-3 to move silently checks for Arvall.
Cernd-ar notices that there appears to be green bile on the some of the sharp pieces, and you recall the demonic beasts had green blood of the same consistency. Perhaps there was a struggle and one of those things was launched out a window, cutting itself on the way down.
Brauer Drudoc
You cast the spell and manage to free most of your body but your right arm is still caught in the nest, you swing yourself toward the ruby catching it in mid-air and swinging around kicking Cid while on his mount (Roll unarmed damage), before finishingyour swing landing back on the net, your right arm still tangled in the rope, and Cid flying around cursing as he tries to maneuver his way back towards you.
Haha don't worry I've been known to make worse mistakes.
Khannon, Rahg'nuul & Azhag
Azhag just nods frantically and begins examining the ring from all conceivable angles why scribbling away in his notebook.
Appraise: 4+8=12
"Your guess is as good as mine", Azhag says when he's finished.
So do you plan to rest before going down again, if so, how long? Also do you plan to bring Azhag with you?

ToDM: wow Nicolas...that was an EPIC update. There's a lot to absorb in that. Very interesting stuff.
Rahg'nuul naturally agreed to allow Azhag to inspect the ring, while it remained securely on his right hand. Once Azhag is finished scribbling and denies any knowledge of the ring, Rahg'nuul puts his glove back on, stares at Azhag and says...
"Azhag, you are quite the accomplished loremaster. Thank you for the account of these lands. But I must insist you tell us what got you so excited about hearing about a ring shaped like a ram. Your reaction was quite obvious. If you deny any knowledge about the particular ring I wear now, that is fine. But what were you hoping to see? Please Azhag, you have been a worthy and valued member of this party thus far. Continue your bond by sharing what you know"
Rahg'nuul also has a conversation with Khannon:
"Khannon, we hunt the artifact because..." (Rahg'nuul shares all he knows about the threat of The Forgotten, which he learned from Melkior and his host amongst the ghost elves)
...
(on the topic of going back down into the shifting maze)
"I plead you to abandon this thought. Escape was fortunate and I am not so willing to discard such luck. I have studied these various journal notes we found below and am convinced that this Fleetfinger fellow was more than capable of defeating the traps and securing his prize. I think the artifact is with him or his mate and long since taken from this place"
(Rahg'nuul conveys all of the information he deciphered from the notes which Khannon could not read)
[to both Azhag and Khannon]
"Fleetfinger says that this entire complex phases at night and I am not interested in being trapped below when that happens. Who knows where it will take us? Perhaps to a plane that will kill us instantly? Please...at dusk, we need to leave.
And finally, Overdark...Underdark...Dragondark...Muledark...whateverdark I will not go that way. You will have to kill me to have me travel east from here. The drow and all of the peoples of that domain, including my own, are the seeds and crops of nightmares."
"Let us risk the gnoll-lands instead and return to the west...and pay a little visit to Mrs. Fleetfinger hmmm???"

Cernd-ar
"My route is clear their base of operations is where I need to go, but still need more evidence before I face those cultist, I would like to find the rest of the colection before facing the cult" turns to cernd ar "Take me to the tavern some clues are bound to be found after wards Ill free you from of your debt if you choose to face the cultist I shall help you, after I have the girl you are on your own"
"This cult must be destroyed. It poisons the land and is an affront to the Lord. If you are here to work against them, then you have my aid...even beyond the debt.
But you must tell me about this girl. And why are you collecting these medallions...these coins?"
"That...is going to make things more....difficult. I suggest you show more care and caution. There is devilry all around us. If we are caught and subdued, they will make us feel pain in ways you cannot imagine.
[Cernd-ar starts leading Arvall towards the tavern, seeking cover wherever possible and timing their movements between cover-points so as to avoid any passersby]

Frederick's hand falls off your shoulder and hits the ground. Dying mid-sentence.
Khannon, Rhag'nuul & Azhag
After being questioned by Rhag'nuul, Azhag says "Well, I figured any sort of trinkets you would have found from this "vault" would be marvellous to behold. I remember a goblin scavenger back at the Fort Helmlock once found a Ring with a raven on it. He placed it on his hand and began flying around, until Grigg ordered his men to fire their bows at him, making him a floating pincushion. When the ring eventually wore off, he plummet to the ground and Grigg eventually handed the ring off to the an inquisitor."
Azhag takes a deep breath and begins going through his book, "However, before Grigg handed it off he had his scribe, a goblin like myself, write down the event and I managed to get a sketch of the ring."
Azhag opens up a diagram in his large moulted tome.
"As you can see, the raven on the ring has bony appendages, but everyone remembers it looking like a raven before this. My theory is the longevity of the magic was determines by the feathers attached to the ring. I was looking at your ring to see if it bared any significant markings to indicate it's power level."
Rahg'nuul Inspects the ram ring more closely noticing that on the ram's horns there are ridges, 10 in total. Perhaps this is a similar marking.
"But no point in guess what indicates it's power if you can't even use it", Azhag says with a shrug before closing his book.
The part rests and enjoys a quick meal as they await nightfall.
Rationing
Normally you can forego worrying about food and the like completely due to the upkeep system. However since you are in the middle of the barrens with no visible food sources for miles there is a small catch. While you still have upkeep and can survive off that, you can only do so for a Maximum of 10 days, after which food that you constantly replenish with is considered having gone "Bad" or supplies are low. Keep in mind if you do not have enough money to pay upkeep then you'll last less than the maximum of 10 days, but this would be like running out of food which can happen anywhere.
When this happens, the character(s) then enter "starvation mode", you only gain 1/4 of your hp per rest and your stats all begin to deteriorate -1, across the board per day. This of course is temporary and stats slowly return to normal after a few days of regular eating.
Khannon 18 cp for upkeep.
Regained Hp and lost AC point.
Khannon gained 1,415 Exp
Rahg'nuul 18 cp - 9 cp for cherries = 9 cp for upkeep
Rahg'nuul gained 1,540 Exp
Azhag takes care of himself pulling out food he has stashed away in his backpack.

In complete desbilife over Frederick's I will sit for a moment and pray for him. Then I will load my pipe and take a hit "For Frederick. A grand freind and will be greatly missed." I will hand the pipe to the orc as to also take a hit for Frederick.

As mentioned previously Rahg'nuul wears the ram ring on his right hand...which connects to his dominant arm...for doing such things as swinging a blade and....(contemplating Azhag's story)...
punching
"Khannon, Azhag...please step to the side of the room"
Rahg'nuul walks up to statue in the center of this chamber...the one Khannon tried to dislodge previously...the one with the cracked foundation. He positions himself at the base of the statue so that the statue is between himself and the vault entrance.
"I hope this doesn't break my arm"
Before Khannon or Azhag even get a chance to respond, Ragh'nuul plots, plans and punches the statue with all of his might using the fist adorned with the 'ram ring'
ToDM: upkeep noted. Stay tuned for my updated character sheet. I believe this XP takes me to LVL 3. I need to figure out my feat and skills. Will adjust my coin balance for upkeep as well.
