When you get a scroll (find it or buy it), go to you're inventory, and rightclick the scroll.
There should be an option to memorize it (I believe it's called write scroll or something (havent played BG for a while)
Remember that there is a chance that you fail to write it, and the scroll is lost (depending on you're inventory)

BTW. How the hell did you get a lvl 9 mage and don't know how to write scolls (sorry this sounds a little harsh, but to get to level 9 in BG requirs almost soloing, and that is most done by "advanced" players)

I never had a problem with reaching the xp cap in BG....... even a party of 6 usually reach it before they go down in Sarevoks dungeon....

I agree it can be done, but still the point is that when you're level 9, you should have some spellcasting exp.

BTW, it's a bit hard to get spell's at level 9, correct me if I'm wrong, but officially there are only 2 cloudkill scroll's?

Again, I haven't played with a mage of that level for some time, so I could be wrong.
