On cliques...

...I really don't know how to explain this since I both agree and disagree with Aegis on this issue.

Why do some people hangout together in the first place?

At SYM I have noticed that there are some groups that somehow established themselves not just because of same interests but they have a relatively same timezone or that their regular OL time coincide with one another.

Take some of the SLURRS for exmaple (Beldin, E-man and Odie), Tammy, Flibbs and me.

There was that particular time when we would hangout at the same time for months thus we established some form of "clique."

Was there any intention for anyone of us to be snobbish or leave other people out? I don't think so. Look at Fas, despite his antagonistic view on alcohol and women

he meshed up nicely with this "regular timeslot group."

Sadly, our new scheds in life have somehow "disrupted" our regular meetings.

I also get to miss my buddy Harry who is from NZ)

I agree with Aegis that there is the tendency to have groups. But is it really a bad thing? Are these groups trying to marginalize other individuals just because they engage in such esoteric type of conversation?

I dont think so.

I think it's up to the individual how he would want to be in the SYMian community.

Mind, there are SYMians there who rarely post yet are very much welcome when they post. Think of curdis, der Moench, leedog, foul, omar, azmodan, etc.

There are others who dont belong to such a "group" yet are very much accepted and adored by the community. I can think of fable, kidD, Z, nightmare, BM, etc...

Maybe there "seems" to be a clique because some of these groups have members who have relatively more free time on the net to socialize. They get to meet with the same people with the same OL time on a regular basis and so, such "clique" was born.

For one thing, COMM is no clique. Go ask Weasel and his ready made lines for newbies.

Very nicely summed up, Mahar, though something was left out. While not intentionally doing so, the formation of these groups (I merely used clique to best describe the faction of SYM) can cause loads of intimidation to new members, and make them feel somewhat out of place, and the same is even possible for older, more established members. People have gotten in there heads that I am blaming them for something, but I am not. I'm only stating a truth of life, that people become inadvertantly less receptive to those they don't know, the social misfits, if you will. When you see people always backing someone else in the group up, regardless of the acts, or validity of a comment, while a new member (or even an older one) becomes dismissed, ignored, or told that they are wrong, it becomes a bit overbearing.

@Ysh: I'm not part of the Dark Flames. I merely wrote a couple of portions of it. Aside from that, though, I rarely, if ever, engaged in the majority of spam that occured in both the tavern thread, and the discussion thread. My involvement was in a professional (as professional as one can get online) sense only. Please, don't associeate me with that raving bunch of lunatics

Oh really.....and here all along I thought we were a bunch of friends hanging out writing a story together. I was not aware that it was a 'professional' organization. I hate to hear that you only want to be associated with us 'professionally'.

Sounds rather 'snobbish' to me....

It's late, so I'm only gonna say one thing. Don't pull that on me. You know exactly what I meant. As far as I'm concerned, I've made my views on this particular matter perfectly clear, and don't need 'Phildelphia lawyers' on my case.

Well sure, it can be intimidating to walk into a place where everyone knows each other, and you don't know them. But I'd have to say that when someone new comes along, just about everyone makes them welcome. Which makes SYM not cliquey, because nobody tries to exclude newcomers. It's like any social group, you have to get to know someone before you feel comfortable with them.

I also think writing groups have a different dynamic to purely social groups - anyone can walk into a pub thread and get chatting easily enough, whereas you have to be more careful just walking into a story, because you could ruin a plot that has been carefully planned, or write something that doesn't gel with the tone of the story. But that doesn't make the people involved less welcoming, it just requires a little more care.

Nicely put re. the whole post @Mah, though in Fas's case I suspect the incessant spiking of tea may have had something to do with it...

That said, it wouldn't have been the same without him.

@Aegis-aren't we all sort of social misfits in here? I doubt there are many forums where we could ramble on the way we do without freaking most of the board out. Try to imagine the impact of the Rolling Thunder on the Bioware boards, for example, or the reaction you'd get if you tried setting up a tavern thread on a politics board. The whole point of SYM, as you well know having been there when it was established, was to move us all (those who were around then, at least) to somewhere where we wouldn't disrupt people who wanted to discuss BG, quite reasonable considering this is technically an RPG computer games website.
BTW, all it takes to be a DF (as far as I'm aware) is to join in with the story. Technically Beldin, Eerhardt and I are also at least honorary DFs, and we just contributed with a side-plot, mostly for the sake of having some fun (and to put in a bit more humor every now and then).
So much for being careful with stories, eh @Georgi?

Correct, I just waltz in and out of places. I was just fortunate enough to of been around when the whole SLURR thing happened and it was a nice ride too

As for the groups its generally a time thing, as others have already said.

I never had time to post in the past apart from my free days or afternoon and now its getting even scarcer, especially with the house sitting. So there are lots of people who I unfortunately will never get to know. It used to bother me in the past, but now I couldn't care less.
