Demos assume an inherent honesty; that people will try, rather than download full software illegally. While I can see that happening in a small portion of the current pirating community, I can't really see it happening everywhere. For one thing, the pirating market has become endemic in Asia--virtually a cultural feature. You can walk down streets in Singapore, Hong Kong, etc, and see pirated goods an display everywhere, without any attempt to disguise that fact. This kind of black-market-accepted-as-the-real-thing is extremely difficult to root out, unless a government takes strong-arm measures (as Stalin did with the NEPmen of the 1920s). The US has been complaining for years to China and other nations without result. Demos won't do it, there.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I can't believe you are actually asking why people hack...
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

Cant I?
I know it seems to simplist, or maybe naive, but you must agree that it is a real big social problem, specially cause one of the main social products today is information. Info=value, value=cash, cash=interest, interest=survival.
@Fable, but Demos have been left aside for a while, with a lot of enterprises preferring videos to half games.

On a related note, most music artists claim they aren't hurt by p2p.
Harvard concurs.
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

Nope, you got me wrong...
The flow of information, knowledge, and social interaction, conversation, must be allowed. A good comm system is essencial for human society maintenance, alas, is the best thing agaist politicians and social disorder...
