Did you hear what Voller said about the German team after the match?? (or it could have been Beckenbauer):

"If you put all of our outfielders in a bag and punched it, the one who got hit would deserve it."

:D :D

Could everyone please stay civil and stop the insulting comments. I know football is a touchy subject for some but many of the inflammatory comments have been unecessary, if they continue i will be forced to close this thread.

@ Kameleon: It was Beckenbauer - but in fact nobody cares too much about Beckenbauer's opinion in Germany because he's pretty much famous for contradicting himself several times within a single sentence. Funny thing is that he was correct this time, Germany - except Kahn, Klose and Schneider - plays as awful as we have expected here in Germany. Their poor play display of skill is nothing new, but nobody would have expected that it would take the team into the semi-finals.

So since it would be a crying shame if this team wins the World Cup, I hope for Turkey and Germany to get into the final and for Turkey to win. We have millions of turkish people here in Germany and I think we could have a good party together.

You just don't understand that I'm no fanatic at losing, I'm simply used to football discussion.
Italy's defeat is long "digested" by now.

What I am debating now is another thing: the regularity of the
tournament.
Here in italy it is not even an argument: they're ALL sure, I really mean ALL, starting from press, that there's is corruption.
I make no exception, as you know.
See, I can even accept the "field factor" and see the home team
helped (happens everytime), simply this time they've exagerated
and raised too many suspects,
and the last declarations of Blatter fully confirm this.
By the way, never thought Italy has the right to win everytime,
nor that we have the strongest team (which is Brazil, IMHO).
I've seen others cups in the past....
We lose at penalties the last three World Cups, we've been eliminated with a golden goal (by France) at the last Europeans...
Who cried about that??? They stole nothing.

@Lost One:
I had understood already your meaning...
The problem is that those goals were IMHO the natural prosecution of
the actions.
In one case (Tommasi) I effectively saw the golie stop... after Tommasi
had avoided him.
To me, they're all disallowed goals.
If you want to call them otherwise, we can find an agreement, but they
carry just the same load of guilt.
By the way: you are right about Chung being Hyundai founder's son and everything. You are also right about his running for the presidency.

Thanx.
Also they said today at TV that Chung was the one whose pressures managed to involve Korea in the tournament, as in the first moment the Cup should have been only in Japan.
Again, don't to what extent this is true, but I suspect it is.

Will this mean that the discussion can progress past the stage of bickering, i hope so.

Of course, I was angry only the "day after", I think I've never bickered anyone...
This media is great, but unfortunately some misunderstandings
are inherent.
One sees a bold text, and thinks the other is typing like crazy on the keyboard!!!
Maybe I've given the wrong impression, but I've been surprised by the comment about restaurants (though somewhat kidding, I hope...)
Really, here Koreans walk freely (!) in the streets and have seen the match with us! :D

I dont believe n conspiracy for Italy. It has been a hot topic here in OZ and everybodies trying to find the conspiracy but the media agrees (they cant find anything and even BBC cant).

On a brighter note..
How about evreyone try to email FIFA and anyone else about having the world cup every 2 YEARS. So instead of the european cup (scrap this ) and have another world cup in europe .
It could work and I think in the future it must.

4 years is too long for such an event and the stakes are too high for countries. Except have it at a different time from olympics.

england ,Italy, spain will have 2 times as much chance now....

Were you watching the world cup show also, yesterday. :D

I personally don't like it. These guys already play too much matches at the moment, and would no doubt lead to burn outs.

Hmm. You know, favoritism has always been present in previous World Cups; this one isn't special, no. I guess when Uganda hosts the World Cup they'll make it to the semifinals, who knows?

2 days to semi fanal match.

We can really win against Brazil. 2 major player cant play. We are at top of our performance. So... :D

But i cant imagine a match between Turkey-Germany. It may be very dangereous because of fanatics. Hope Korea wins tomorrow.

Brazil vs Turkey will be a very exiting game, i see Brazil to pass but after a hard fight. Turkey still remembers what happened the first game. :)

Germany vs S.Korea, i'll just have to wait and see, i'm not making predictions on this one. :D

Brazil vs. Germany in the finals. The two best world cup teams ever, play against each other. Or is Italy better than Germany in WC?

I agree with Thorin, I'd like to see Brazil and Germany in the final - a classic meeting :)

Technically both(Italy and Germany) have the same power, but Germany has reach the finals more than Italy and Brazil.
I'm also waiting for a Brasil X Germany.

It may be called a classic meeting - because Brazil & Germany are the 2 top teams in terms of going the furthest in World Cup History and have an impressive collection of victories - but here's a few nice facts:
Brazil and Germany have never played each other in the history of World Cups. To finally do so, and do so in a final would be amazing.
Fact 2: Brazil may be the only country to have played in every single World Cup, but Germany has never failed to qualify for one - in 1950 they were absent because they didn't have a team due to post-war problems.
One other thing: On the three previous occasions Brazil have played England - drawing once and winning twice in 1958, 1962 and 1970 - the Brazilians have gone on to win the trophy.
Also, a Germany-Brazil final would be even more excitin' because it would be a fight for World Cup domination - meanin' that if Germany win, they are tied with Brazil with 4 Cups each - and if Brazil win, well it's pentacampeao (as they say it) for 'em.
PS: Oh yeah, and who would have thought these 2 great teams - based on their qualifying campaigns where Brazil had to win the last game & came 3rd in the group...and Germany had to play Ukraine in the play-off - would reach the semi-finals? Guess you just can't take tradition away.

Does anybody know how many world cups each team has won?

I know Brazil has 4, 2 or 3 with Pele and in '94.
Germany got all its 3 as West Germany.
I'm not sure about the others: I think Argentina has 2, Italy has 1 or 2, but they have been to alot of finals. Uruguay has 1 or 2 doesn't it? England also 1 or 2. I think Russia won one of the WCs. Mexico may have won one too. France in '98. What about Finland or Sweden? I would like to verify this.

Here is a good link to all previous WC:s, Thorin.

http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/en/pf/h/pwc/index.html

On the top of my head, I know Brazil has 4 (1958, 62 and 1970 with Pele, 1994) Italy has 3 and Germany (then West Germany) also has 3. England has 1, 1966 I think, and France also has one, the last one.

And for those into trivia, the US are not that new to the World Cup...they were semi finalists back in the 30s :)

And we have far too many other sports competing for time and money (football, baseball, hockey, backetball and NASCAR) for soccer to be of much interest to us.
