I used to think there wasn't necessarily a contradiction between the two, but some of Thantors comments made me think that maybe there is? See the questions in my post above.

@C Elegans, I think you put it well when you wrote to Thantor:

Why are you viewing non linear, interactive and multifactorial theory constructs as connected to alternative medicine and not to traditional/academic medicine? Of course the views are different, but I certainly don't agree they are opposites in all aspects.

I think he's used to arguing it almost as an advocate, in a court of law where the jury is predisposed against his client--hence, some of the hostility. IMO, it's misdirected, but I can empathize with his goals.

Yshania, I agree with you. When I was a kid, I was stuffed full of antibotics. My immune system is shot to hell, I take nothing but herbs and vitamins. I don't go to the doctors, unless it's to the emergency room. It's always good to get the ol' back straightened out, some of those getting pinched, do go to your organs also.

DP, read my post above about a certain herb (called Johannes herb in my language) and the effect on the immune system! I just want to make sure you are NOT eating this one, never!

Good you know about it already DP, I was getting nervous there for a while. I checked the English name anyway, it's St John's Wort, Hypericum Perforatum.

Overuse of antibiotics is very dangerous, for the individual and for the development of resistent bacteria. Actually the widespread problem with resistent bacteria stems from the overuse in North and South America.

I take ginsing to improve my memory... or is it my erection. I can't remember

Seriously, most medicines come from a natural source, even if they are later synthisized... the only catch is they are tested and must prove reasonably effective. Is that such a bad thing? Herbs, to the best of my knowledge, still need no such proof in the US.
Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time

@Waverly: In Sweden we have this system: Anyone can open up a herb shop and sell his stuff. Swedish FDA only do some testing to make certain the products are not dangerous. However, they are not tested for efficacy, and not for degree of side effects.

Synthetic medicine is extensively tested for a minimum of 2 years before it is released in Sweden. Short term and long term effects of different dosage, as well as side effects and interactions are examined on healty subjects and on patients. We have much more strict laws here that in the US. Personally, I think that's a good thing.
