You and me, both. But this year, we're taking a couple of weeks in late September at the Northern Outer Banks in North Carolina. It will be hot and humid, only we'll have a very large house (they usually make 'em for 8-10 people), with access to a pretty excluded portion of beach, nature trails, a large, outdoor whirlpool on one of the upper story decks...even the heat won't be able to dissipate the sheer lazy, animal enjoyment of it all. Then, in late October or early November, we may take the better part of a week to visit NYC. Next year, if all goes well, we'll be back in Europe for three weeks--maybe one (or two, at the most) of the cities in a Scandanavian or Baltic country. We'll see.

Sounds very relaxing Hopefully you'll get some more wind since you have beach nearby - here it does not blow a single knot at the moment which makes it less pleasant. If all goes well, we may visit NYC later this year, perhaps in the autumn or early winter. I have never been there, so it's about time, don't you think? Around christmas I always prefer the Arab world, and now when the Emirates turned out to be the first to abandon the Taliban regime, I'm considering going back there...I often think about the beautiful golden sand dunes, and I love the city of Dubai...

I would agree. Let me know when you're planning to show up. We could meet you, show you around a bit. If you were staying near Philly, we'd gladly put you up; but alas, we're a good 90 minutes to 2 hours from NYC.

Sounds beautiful. I've been intrigued by some of Arab culture, but put off by their treatment of women. Did you find that a problem in Dubai?

I'll absolutely let you know if our plans turn out as we wish! With my job, it is however always very difficult to plan anything in advance...

I have not had any problems while travelling in the Arab world, neither have my female friends. In the Emirates, only about 25% of the population are actually Emirate citizens, the rest is immigrant workers from all over the world, including Europe and the US. People there are used to Westerners and understand Western lifestyle, so nobody will harass you for going around in a sleeveless little dress, should you like to. Of course I get a bit disturbed when I see women in traditional dress looking like black ghosts with even their eyes covered, walking two steps behind their husbands, but this is similar to what I feel in most places including Sweden - it is just the target that differs. In almost all countries, I feel disturbed by poverty, drug addicts, homeless, etc - but this you don't see in the Emirates since there are no homeless people or no people so poor that have to beg. I get more sad by walking along the Strand in London a winter night, seeing all the homeless people who sleeps on the red carpets in the warm entrances to the posh restaurants and offices So no, the treatment of women is no more disturbing to me than other injustices in this world. And for me personally, I have never experienced problems. Dubai is probably the place where you could expect the least problems, it is obviously a totally different story in Saudi.

Should you decide to visit Sweden, Stockholm is a very pretty city in the summer. For dramatic scenery, Norway is the best, and for cultural experience, I would say the Baltic countries have the most to offer.

Something I'd actually like to see, is the Philadelphia museum of modern art, since one of my favorite artists, Marcel Duchamp, donated the best part of his works to that museum.

Oh! We go there, frequently. And they do have quite a nice periodic exhibit on the surrealists and dadaists. Duchamp's work isn't always available, but I've been intrigued by what they've displayed of it. I only wish they would accompany such exhibits by music composed at the time of its initial creation for such a purpose by friends of the artists, but the typical museum sterility prevents that.

I quite like the dada era, not only Duchamp. The Stockholm museum of modern art has a relatively good collection of Duchamps work, and several replicas of ready-mades that Duchamps authorised himself, probably because he was good friends with the guy who was head of the museum then. Most of my friends who haven't been familiar with Duchamps work, have reacted either with being curious, or by being angry But he is not the most intuitive of artists, I did a lot of reading (he left a lot of notes concerning his works) before I realised how much I liked it.

What other interesting stuff are on exhibit at Philadelphia's museum? There must be a lot, it's supposed to be quite good, isn't it?
