Now where's that bar monkey, hope someone's remembered to keep feeding him...

EDIT-And now I have to go do some work, so I'll see whoever's around when I next show up.

Hi Ode, nice to see you :) How on earth did you manage to dig up this old tavern, it should be of interest to Gwally and Waverly by now.

The bar monkey unfortunately got served as a snack, but I am sure Tyb doesn't mind replacing him :D

So how is life? I am dead tired after having slept 4 hours and worked for 13, so I'm going to bed now, but see you soon I hope!

Heya CE, I just went hunting for the oldest tavern thread I could find that El Sleepo hadn't shut down. A bit of history, so to speak. ;)

Someone ate the bar monkey, huh? Only on SYM...
Guess someone'll have to start training Tyb for the job then...can I rely on you to do it @CE? It's all electro-shock therapy

to discourage bad behavior (like mixing drinks poorly, learning how to pour a beer without too much head-no-one make any jokes that may be in bad taste here, please-, etc), so you're about the best person I can think of for it...Image

Life is good. My studies are going well, I'm getting good results, and learning philosophy is interesting. Seeing my RL friends a lot is nice, as is finally seeing my cousin after three years of his living in England. With any luck I'll be able to get my old account back sometime within the next few weeks, or whenever Buck gets around to it. As with all students money is not exactly abundant, but that's for a large part due to buying a replica of the LOTR movie Glamdring (or Gandalf's sword to those who aren't familiar with LOTR).
I'm not very good at resisting temptation...

@Tam-I'll be AWOL from SYM again after tomorrow, until I next get up into the hills, but we should catch up soon regardless. I need to go shopping for more winter clothes (Op shop time) and a few other odds and ends soon, maybe we could spend a day in Freo or something?
I'll call/message you once I'm through the load of essays and revision for tests I've got coming up, and we'll figure something out then.
BTW, the Gamecube Zelda game is looking decidedly nice, have you tried the demo version in-store yet?
Almost makes me want to go out and get a Gamecube myself...

*sigh* It's just no fun baiting Ty unless he's around... :(

@The eating of the bar monkey was a collective effort from all the guests :D I think Weasel got the testicles :D

@Ode: I will take personal responsibility for Tyb's training :D Apart from drink mixing I also consider to teach him to do entertaining dances on the tables.

That's great to hear! :) I imagined you'd be apt for studying philosophy. The limited budget is always a problems for students, and like you I was no good at resisting temptations either...so I ate a lot of pasta in my student days :D

Why, thank you, Doctor. You know how hard it is to find good help these days, and thorough job training is so important.
I recommend the can-can, by the way, though it must be said that the notion of Tyb doing a drunken rendition of Swan Lake has a certain novelty value... :D

Philosophy suits me right down to the ground (Socrates is the current favourite), especially since I'm finding that I've thought through most of the ideas I've been coming across when I was at high school anyway. High school was incredibly boring (hence my exploring philosophy during it), thankfully university offers quite a bit more stimulation for the ol' grey matter. Being told that "You're going to be great" by your tutors is nice too. :D [/bragging]
I've been learning a little sociology and some of the basics of psychology, too. ;)
Funding is a really big issue at my university, the vice-chancellor has been giving a ridiculous percentage of funding to the Vetinary Studies division at the expense of other areas (especially the Arts section, unfortunately for me). Tutorials are either not offered for philosophy or have too many people, as many as fifty in some cases (my tutorials tend to be around twenty people or so). Though my university is the only one in Western Australia to offer a vet course (and the second-best on the country, apparently), very little of my fees have gone towards my own division, and a number of my tutors think that philosophy will be phased out totally within ten years. :(

Taking it easy in the form of reading more about the short allele of the 5-HTTLPR gene and post an occational spam-post here, yes. Not taking it easy as in when you take it easy ;)

@CM: Paid? Isn't it pay enough that I let you down from the wall and gave back your clothes? :D

@Dottie: It's amazing you have energy enough to keep breathing  I do however detect a trace of you believing I don't work enough, so I promise I will work more in the future :D

@Ode: Can-can would suit Tyb perfectly :D I was also thinking of teaching him something by Jan Fabre, the Dutch choreographer who often lets his dancers perform in underwear only :D

It good you get a bit more stimulation at university. Like you, I was bored to a coma by school before uni. Philosophy, sociology and psychology sounds like a very interesting combination.

Too bad about the funding situation at your university :( It is a general problem in academia that short term pay off of the kind that is easy to identify, governs too much of the activites. Basic research, arts and other areas where the outcomes are not immediate but perhaps of very large importance when they come, often has to struggle to survive. I can think of few subjects that are so generally useful for all students, as philosophy. In Norway, all university students study one year of basic philosophy before they can go on to furhter studies of their choice. I think that is excellent. Criticial thinking, analysis, logics, building up arguments, history of ideas, language functions etc are all so very fundamental skills that all students of theorical topics should have a basic understanding of.

*sigh* I so pity you *kiss*

I'm just reading a from Elias lab about estrogen receptor genes and personlity traits. The background provided in this paper go through a lot of behavioural data connected to estrogen, and it's interesting to note that increased levels of estrogen can make people both more and less aggressive, and female mice knocked out on the ER alpha become more aggresive, whereas their male fellow knock-out become less aggressive. In short, it seems that increase of estrogens can both increase and decrease aggression in female mice and increase of testosterone can both increase or decrease aggression in male mice. Isn't it great when life is easy :D

While not being easy atleast life tend to, from time to time, debunk some common views of, for example, causes of agressivity. I think its a more than fair tread off. ;)
