There are several ways to handle that problem.
One is that "the problem" could be the thing making the romance interesting and difficult itself.
Think of it.
Imoen is not as haughty as Jaheira, is not as insecure as Aerie and is definitely not evil as Viconia. What could be the problem then if a problem didn't ever exist? The romance would have to start with "and they lived happily ever after!" :)

(Sorry for talking again of Imoen in Nalia's thread... but the point is, if we had both romance available, we could make comparisons!)
Where we came from, we don't know
Where we're going.... (even worse)
And about who we could be, we actually have trouble in clearly defining the term "to be" in the first place...

Nalia's ok....mainly because her stats/skills are fairly good (although they're somewhat similar to Imoen. There's nothing Master Thievery potions can't fix....and with the amount of magic items to sell in BG/ToB, I find it hard to believe you'll ever be hard pressed to purchase five of those at a time. I tolerate her personality. IMO, she doesn't bray as much as Aerie, but I think their more annoying dialogues can be ignored.
