They were all groundbreaking in their own way and time, and were games that I got totally absorbed in.

Only Morrowind of the above is still worth playing now, but that is more to do with technology than gameplay or challenge.

I already posted my top ten favs in an earlier post. There was no way I could pick a single favorite! It was hard enough to narrow it down to ten! Anyway, you can check them out when you get the chance.

My first RPG game ever played was ALIEN on C64, back in the 80's.
Eons ago.

True, I was around 12, but I still remember entering the spaceship and seeing "close up" on the wall with inscription "help me". Written in blood, of course. Although the game did not have a lot in common with a movie and that true RPGs were developed much later, this one remains in the back of my memory.

On PC, I don't believe there is one RPG that can compete with BGII.

Diablo was OK.
And Morrowind costed me nerves. It just took to much of my time just to find out what the hell should I do. And I still had my real life and my Uni to finish. So, it remains on the shelves, untouched.

KOTOR was good from the point of view that I have two ways of finishing it.

How can you top BG1?

BG1 not only started it all, it continues to stand as the high-water mark in RPGs. The game allowed you to travel and explore however you desired. As much as I loved BG2, the sequel suffered from some mild linearity in how you could explore the world: far less areas to explore in the "wild" and too many restrictions in when areas of the world would open up to you. The nature of the random encounters in BG1 presented situations where your weak little foster child could be faced with brutally tough battles. Travelling around the various areas and uncovering the "black fog" bit by bit was tense. Lots of fun.

Pool of Radiance (the original)

MY favorite RPG of all time was the orginal Pool of Radiance on the commodore 64. I am dating myself here but that was one of my favorites. Even before that I played an RPG on a Texas Instruments computer called Tunnels of Doom. I think that game was the 1st ever RPG I played but Pools of radiance was my first. Being able to kill 8 hobogoblins with the sweep attack in one turn was so fun.

Started what? BG1 was strongly based on the structure and features of Ultima VI and VII. Bioware streamlined and improved the interface, but everything else you mention was already present in the earlier titles. And if your point is that "XYZ started computerized RPGs," then I've still got copies of my 1980s RPG titles that would say otherwise.

The first rpg's i played were on the sega mega drive. Does anyone recognise any of these titles:

Shining in the darkness
Rings of power
D&D Warriors of the eternal sun
Super hydlide (dont think thats spelt correctly)

These were some great games.

My favorite rpg are (in order)
Fianl fantasy 7- For anyone who has played it the reasons should be obvious. I got it when it first came out and I still play it from time to time. Great garphics (for the time) gameplay was top notch, unbelievable characters and an absolutely amazing story (which in my opinion is the most important part of an rpg)
Star Wars :Knights of the old Republic - I bought this game without knowing anything about it. I had not played many games for a while and I was given a gift certificate for christmas. I saw the game on the store shelf and thought "This looks kind of cool". I now consider it my second favorite game of all time. Every reason I gave for F.F.7 also applies to this game. Plus it is a star wars game, great side quests, in game romance and so much more. The ONLY thing that keeps it in second place for me is that , while it does have replay value, it does not have as much replay value as F.F.7 (in my opinion).

I saw my friend once play baldurs gate and icewind dale in his plays cople of years ago and i loved that kind of game. And cople of years ago i saw Icewind Dale 2 in some store and i said **** it an bought it. But i have never play rpg game, and i create lame party and lose and **** and din't play the game for a long time. But recently i play again and are coming in chapter 5 and can't stop. I did bought Baldurs Gate 2 + expension and Morrowind in last week and are playing Baldurs Gate 2.

*nods vigorously* I prefer the later titles in the "Shining" series, although those are more like a blend of chess with an RPG. I played D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun, and a few of the Phantasy Star series. I miss the old RPG's, the graphics are nothing on today, but truly, newer games are sad in comparison in quality.

Eye of the Beholder as well. Good old fashioned dungeon crawl and monster bashing, and it's not 3D!

My life changers ...

Baldur's Gate 1 got me into this RPG playing thing.
Daggerfall made me love it.
Fallout made me kill for it.

Baldurs Gate 2: I wasn't really into RPG's, but an old friend once said that it was a really good game, I bought it and it hooked me.

I've definately spent the most time playing it than any other game..

My journey into the land of role-playing started out a little bit different than everyone else's, I think...I started out role-playing on message boards, things like "And Eurydice turned to her left, glaring at the offending man, and drew her sword with malice and bloodlust, eager to engage in battle." Things like that. It really helps develop your writing skills.

My friend Kimberly introduced me to that. After six months of that, she says to me, "How about we try some REAL role-playing."

She hooked up her playstation and put the controller in my hands, thus introducing me to Final Fantasy VIII.

We began at 6 p.m. We stopped playing at five in the morning, eleven hours later, to watch the sunrise. It was truly thrilling. I just couldn't put the damn thing down.

I later purchased Final Fantasy VII, and was hooked. Fantastic game (though after playing FFVIII first, I must confess I was disappointed with the stubby block arms. Plot totally made up for it, though.) Recently I just watched the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. If you've played the game, and can stand listening to Japanese and reading English subs for an hour and forty minutes, I strongly recommend watching it. The CGI in that movie are AWESOME, and I mean AWESOME. You can't tell what's real and what's not...and it's all computer-generated.

And then of course, knowing what a Star Wars geek I am, she invited me over and introduced me to KotOR numero uno. And I couldn't put it down. The plot twist had me giggling with delight. I bought the thing myself and played it a trillion times before purchasing number two, which was something of a disappointment.

Bless my dear friend, for her XBOX is fried and she has not played KotOR II yet. I bought her Jedi Academy for Christmas to tide her over.

I am only answering because I thought it so cool that you quoted Val Kilmer from Real Genius poking fun of Dr. Hathaway when he said,"...there are decaf brands on the market that are just as tasty..."

1)Morrowind(until Oblivion is released) True non-linear gameplay. I can go to Dagoth Ur as a level 1 and he will mock me for coming to him too soon.

2) KoToR 1 & 2: A truly epic storyline worthy of the Star Wars saga. Waiting for 3 to finish it in SW fashion.

3) Temple of Elemental Evil(ToEE): Separate storylines for each alignment, with different ways to complete the story(and maintains the feel of the PnP game).

2. Kights of the old republic 1. is second. the storyline was killer nothing better, hands down.

4. is Suikden 2 because if you save data from Suikden 1 you could use it on part two. [ that rocks!!!]
