Evening DW, how are things going for you?
Hi CE, things are good ;) My work went well today, and I finally figured out how to use the new headphone/microphone set that I bought for my computer. I had trouble figuring out which socket went into which plug, but it is all in good working order now :)

ROFLMAO :D You manage to turn anything into something negative, it's amazing! :D How on earth does one recieve a totally unexpected amount of money? Did someone drop them on you? Did you walk into a cash machine so hard that it broke and spitted out bills? :D Good anyway, maybe that will solve your storage problems?

@DW: Good to hear you are well :) and that technology doesn't break your spirit :D Are you going to use your new headphone/microphone set for something special?

@CE, lol! I have plenty of trials with technology but I am also stubborn so I do what I can to make it submit and bend to my will! :D I use headphones so I can actually talk to my icq contacts. It is great, because it is just like using the telephone and it saves a fortune in long distance bills, because it is completely free :)

@Dottie, evening ! :) Glad to hear you are well ;)

Evening DW :) Well, I didnt really have a choice about it... ;)

@Dottix: I have absolutely no idea what the English word for "semesterersättning" would be, let's ask DW:

Is there an English word for retroactive payment you get for your vacation? In Sweden, you have right to 5 weeks (sometimes 6 weeks) vacation with full salary, and if you don't use all of this time (for instance, if you have a part-time job like Dottie has), you get money instead.

@DW: I'm totally behind regarding this kind of technology  I don't use ICQ, but I know what it is. I didn't know you can speak through it though, I've only used satellite phone and that was a horribly slow. How does it work? Does the other person actually hear you like when you use a phone, or are your spoken words transformed to text?

It actually tends to be called a retroactive pay check :)

ICQ....when it decides to cooperate ( it is occasionally temperamental) gives you three choices. It allows to you to send text messages back and forth, or alternatively you can open a chatroom in which you see the other person typing. If you use the icq phone function it is completely identical to talking on the telephone. All you need to do is plug the microphone/headphone set into the back of the computer, and on the little icq talk box (which is what you also use for just text messages), you simply click the "talk" button and it initiates a PC to PC phonecall. I was talking to somebody in the UK today for about 3 hours, I shudder to think what that would have cost via the standard telephone....

@Dottie, lol! you sound a great deal like Eeyore from Winnie the Poo :D

@DW: The phone functions sounds great :) I wish that service had been available when my hubby lived in the US and South America...I refuse to even think of how much money we spent on phone bills, despite the fact that we also had e-mail and text ICQ contact.

Retroactive pay check, thanks :) In Swedish, it is a difference between any kind of retroactive pay check, and the special type you get as compensation for not fully using your right to vacation. Sometimes it has comical effects, I hired a friend and colleague of mine to do just a few hours work for me, and almost a year later, she recieved the grand sum of 1 SEK (US $0.1) in retroactive payment from Karolinska Institute... :D

And why would that be bad? Are there any inconvenient side-effects? ;)

ICQ phone is great :) What surprises me is that the phone companies have not yet attempted to do anything to stop it. Maybe if it becomes better known and really catches on this will happen........Although I hope not because I have a lot of friends and relatives in Europe and Britain so this is a great way to remain in contact :)

It is also a lot of fun to use it if you are playing SoA online with somebody. :)

*casts happiness spell over Dottie* :D

Hello @CE, Dottie

@dragon wench:

 I've seen what phone bills can result from that...people in Europe used to call the US, and would rack up phone bills in the thousands of US dollars in one month's time.

I tried using ICQ, but alas, I simply couldn't get it to work. :(

Hmmmm....it is usually pretty easy to downlaod and install.... Did you get the version that is appropriate for your computer? :) Normally when you download icq, it just walks you through when you install it....

regarding the 3 hour conversation, I would probably not have spoken that long on the normal phone.... But since it was possible and doesn't cost anything I figured, why not ! :D

@DW: Sounds absolutely great :) Let's hope it stays free for a long time to come. :) I have some friends though where this wouldn't be of any use, people living in remote areas where there are no normal phones, or not even electricity. I have a friend who I can only keep in touch with by sending snailmail letters to a relative of his who has a shop in a village where my friend often passes by - he is a Berber semi-nomad, so he doesn't even have an address. :D

I cant see what they could possibly do about it, I dont think there is any good way to stop people from sending data over internet. :)

Havent used it much myself though  Just a couple of times for online games...
