OMG!! I find myself empathising with Aegis!!!
It must be the distant equine blood in him that is appealing to the druid in me...that or the fact that Ysh has had it upto her little pointy ears with The Underdark!
You know, Ysh, I still retain a couple endowments from being a Horse. Care to emphasize a little more

big nose = big boggers
big feet = big shoes
big hands = big gloves

Conveniently enough, I just happen to have a smithy's hammer and numerous appropriate nails on my person

Why am I not surprised? I must say, 16 penny nails seem a little bit extreme for the task at hand.
I am actually writing posts. I've got quite a bit down today and should have stuff up tonight.
Maybe it's the axe after all that's leading the orcs. If Erudish isn't conscious of it's life, than he wouldn't be aware that, given his past, he is the perfect vehicle for wielding the axe and leading the campaign.
I like the idea of the axe being a soul stealer. However, is the axe itself the phylactery of these souls or merely a medium. If the axe is only a medium, than the true souls are stored elsewhere once extracted from the body. If that's the case, then someone's has the phylacteries. Saddle up kids, we're going to the abyss. I'm currently immersed in book six of 'war of the spider queen' which deals with a lot of interplanar travel.
We could always tie in a little 'potter' theme with the axe. The keeper of the souls is some decrepit mage sustaining himself in a parasitic fashion waiting for the right soul to lure in an effort to once again take on a corporeal form a la Voldemort.
I haven't been able to find book five!!!
In all seriousness though, I think that the axe as a medium is probably the best background we could possibly have - and it gives the story focus. If everyone else decides that this is what they want to follow, then I'd totally go with this idea.
@Aegis....you sick, sick, man. How on earth would you tuck it in??
@DW...with someone like Aegis, better to be safe than sorry. Especially since he still has horsey features
@Demo...Wherever we kill, you'll be pissing the enemy off, so don't worry about not going to the Underdark
@WBG...I agree with Demo on this one. At that point, Erudish will still be hostile and wouldn't care what a bard would have to say about his weapon. After all, he's the bad guy right now. At Windhaven though, the person who identifies the axe is up for grabs.

Let's just avoid the Underdark for a while, can we? I think Amara would go into convulsions if she had to face her mental traumas again. ANd that just wouldn't be fun to write.
Plus, we'd never get ourselves out.
