Groaning spirit bug

i have tried several times to kill the groaning spirit but the 3rd attack or if i cause alot of damage to it the next character freeses up and the game wont continue i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and do i need to do this spirit to win the game

I've never seen or heard of this particular bug. If you have an older save file, you might try backing up a bit, as it could be the result of file corruption.
Most of the game freezes these days are the result of using fragarach or scather, but they're only problematic when enemies cause damage in certain ways when it's not their turn (e.g. salamander fire damage), so I don't think that could be the issue here.
What version of the game/patches/mods are you running?
