AHH! Virgil killed and last save is 12 hours ago!

Well, as you can tell from the title, I am in some serious s***.

Virgil was KOed from stamina deprevation after a battle while I took care of a couple of were-rats. Unbeknownst to me, sometime during my fight, Virgil got back up and (most likely) ran into a trap, which killed him. After dispatching the were-rats, I quicksaved (which, dumbly, I have been relying on entirely for a while for my save) only to notice that Virgil's portrait was gone from the screen. After which I uttered a stream of words that even Quentin Tarantino would wince at.

Anyway...

I absolutely must find some way to get Virgil back. He was level 24 and damn-near indespensable in my game, as I am an archer and need healing constantly. I downloaded a character editor, but no dice - it only allows me to change the stats of characters already in my party, not add new ones or ressurrect fallen ones. I also ran to the nearest town and grabbed a scroll of ressurrection, but by the time I came back, poor Virgil was a little red puddle with a staff lying in it.

Does anyone know of a way that I can do this? Pehaps a save game edit in wordpad or some sort of 3rd party app? I'm really not in the mood to slug through 12 hours of Arcanum all over again.

Well if you need a healer rather than a tank-healer you can recruit Perriman Smythe or Raven although both have some vexing spells up their sleeve, but heal as good as any.

If you're far enough into the game to go to Caladon you can acquire a medical arachnid there.

If you don't mind a spoiler see No 23 here to see how to get the medical arachnid.

BTW I don't think there's any way of getting Virgil back other than reverting to the previous save.

Does Virgil have anything meaningful to contribute to the story after you go to the inn at Stillwater and recieve the letter? That was the last thing related to him that I did.

Sadly, for your predicament, I'd have to admit he does. Not that's essential to the story itself, but but his own story is, in my opinion, worth going through once.

If you intend to go through the game again, then maybe you could leave his tale until next time.

If playing a game more than once is not for you, and you want to follow Virgil's personal storyline to its conclusion, then you're going to have to bite the bullet and go back to your last save with him alive.

It's all a matter of taste of course, if you do revert to your last good save, and find Virgil's tale totally worthless, please don't come hunting me with a gun in your hand. :D

I've decided to soldier on without Virgil, I'll follow up on his story on another playthrough (with the open-ended nature of Arcanum, how could you NOT play through it again?) and pick up another healer asap. Although I'm not sure about the particulars with Virgil, it was all too obvious that:
- He had a past as a thief (as evidenced by his lockpicking skill and his frequent allusions to a shady past)
- He spent a good deal of time in Tarant
Aside from that, I suppose it will have to wait...

Without him, is there any way to get in touch with his master? I would guess yes, because it seems pretty intregal to the main quest line, but I have no idea.

At any rate, I love this game and have no idea why I slept on it for so long. I mean really, I have a freaking Brotherhood of Steel tattoo and I let this one coast under the radar. (:
