Goodbye everybody

I'm leaving the board, and like to say goodbye to all of you.

The background to this is stated in my 5th post (the one addressed to Buck) in the "I don't believe my eyes" thread.

I know the thread about being a gay gamer was not closed because of the member's sexual preferences. I know GB doesn't have a discriminating attitude toward anyone. If the thread has not been closed, offensive, prejudiced and outright unacceptable replies had been posted. None of us would have wanted to see that.

I'm not saying closing the thread was the wrong decision, I'm sure it was the right decision for the majority of the members here, including the 2 gay gamers that had posted. I'm very happy Lee seems satisfied with the solution, and have continued to post here. I'm also happy to see many people have welcomed him.

BUT

My personal opinion still differs.

Freedom of speech has its price, like all freedom.

By closing the thread, inevitable insults and flames were avoided. But the price in this case, is that gay gamers aren't allowed to discuss the game freely under the same condition as straight gamers. To me, that is discrimination in effect, even if the reasons for these conditions are not meant to be discriminating.

Heterosexual romances can be discussed in detail with explicit sexual and sexist remarks from both genders. Lesbian romance in BG2 (possible with the romance patch) can be discussed. But discussion from a gay perspective by a member who states he is gay, was not allowed since homophobic users posted offensive material in response.

As I see it, this is letting intolerant and prejudiced people influence the board too much, as they have the power to get a topic closed just by behaving badly.

This is not a moral standard I can accept, and since I'm at this board by free will and just to enjoy myself, I will now take my leave.

@Buck, Flagg and the other moderators: I think you do a great job in keeping this board such a good place. I know it's certainly not your job to protect different minority groups in society from discrimination, it's your job to protect Gamebanshee and its users from flame wars, insults and generally unpleasant experience. This job, I think you are performing excellently. I certainly agree with you that keeping GB a nice place for as many members as possible, should be the ultimate priority. I just don?t agree with the methods you used, and consequences of that chosen strategy.

Thank all of you for making this great board what it is.

Should any of you feel like contacting me, I can be reached at c_elegans666@hotmail.com. I will also check back for PM:s in a few days.
Bye and happy gaming when ToB is released!

@C Elegans, I wish you'd reconsider. You've been among my favorite posters. More generally speaking, I think it's fair to say that your opinions are strongly respected, even when disagreed with. You have respect, and friends, here. Please, consider whether they're worth leaving over this matter.

I’m sorry to see you go C Elegans, especially under such a shadow as recent flame post you mentioned. I can’t say I agree with your decision but I respect your integrity and can only pray in earnest that you might one day return... And mayhap, it’ll be a more accepting place when you come back.

please do reconsider.
though i truly understand how you feel, i can't help but feel that you leaving will be a mistake. there should be more posters like you here in these forums not less. who will fill the gap you leave behind? those that responded to lee's thread showed their immaturity and fear but how are they to learn anything if you simply walk away? we can rise above such fools and show what a mature person should be. we should lead by example. the fools will get their dues one way or another, as to the topic itself, reforms come from within. why don't you stay and help it along?

During moments like this I make myself a promise: never post antoher flame again! I wouldn't want someone to leave a great board like this just because of some flames. :(

I was one of the one's who e-mailed Buck. I read the replies and figured Buck needed to know....As Fable said it was looking like a pile-on.

Leaving will not help it....it will just be another win for the closed minded. In a perfect world everybody can get alone...we just don't live in one yet.

When the post was first posted...I thought...should I warn Buck so he can post a reply telling everyone to behave....but I didn't...I expected more of some people.

I hope you reconsider. :(

@C Elegance:

Allow me to translate Astafas for all you people who don't speak Mongolian ( ;) )...

"Miss Elegans, I find you very attractive and hope that your upset over the homosexual incident is short-lived. I do desire that you come back to Gamebanshee so that we can make many beautiful babies together. PS You can come see my pet Zebra if you wish (its actually a donkey with black and white stripes painted on, ho-ho."

CE, I sorry to see you leave. I very much enjoyed your input on the threads. It's too bad immaturity had to rear it's ugly head. You will be missed. Please reconsider.

@Xandax:

This is SYM. Anything goes as long as it is polite, right? I'm no newbie and well familiar with the internationality of this board. My words were addressed to C Elegance (therefor the @) and I believe an exception from the rule could have been overlooked this once. However, if you feel offended because I excluded you, I humbly apologize.

@Gruntboy:

:D :D :D Ever the joker, aren't you... Keep it up!
