Can't get into city from Northern Forest

I got through one time when the goblin let me through the secret entrance and ambushed me. However, every time I play a new character and start a new game, the goblins are not there, the outside gate is open, but there is no way through the second gate into the sewers. Is this a glitch or am I missing something?

Did you talk to the Gate Guard?

I did talk to guard. If you do not talk to guard, then neither the exterior gate on the secret entrance nor the interior gate on the secret entrance will be open. In my situation, the exterior gate is open, but the interior gate is not. Goblins never appear. Any ideas?

did you talk to the guy at the campfire? I had that problem once and talking to the guy by the campfire cleared it up!

Yup - talked to Simon at the campfire and read the letter. I also spoke to the guard at the gate. Not sure why it let me in the first time, and then every subsequent new game I play it won't let me in the interior gate and goblins never show up!

Have you patched your game? If you're playing the original version, then clicking to skip dialogue will mess things up.

Where is the second gate? If you are talking about the hole in the floor, you have to pull the lever on the wall to open it.

So you talked to the guy at the campfire, and you talked to the gate guard, and the goblin didn't show up? Did you look around to the left of the gate? Did you try starting a new game?

Keep trying...
I had this problem when I was playing the game on my laptop with XP, without the required specs to play game. I had a different problem when I switched to Vista, on gaming computer. Now I can get game to work on both systems using both OS's. I just cant remember how I got past THIS particular problem on laptop. I think I had to re-install the game.
I have the CE version, and you dont need to patch it, but I may have done so anyway. I have been looking for the past hour trying to find all the different patches, and havent been able to come up with anything I recognize. So my suggestion is to re-install the game.

Saylix, if you're using Vista, you might want to read this thread.

Well?
Saylix,
Did you figure it out? Did you get in?
I cant re-create the problem, or I dont think I can, and honestly havent been looking for solutions.
If you havent made it in the sewers yet, I will start searching everywhere until I find it. Or I might anyway.
Im frustrated right now with my weak Lizard Mage/Fighter (not a fighter until Arindale), getting ready to go into the deepest bowels of Custard Mansion (in Fargrove after sewers, in the slums). He will get stronger, and is strong, just cant kill critters as well as Urgoth Fighter/Mage.
But anyway, just checkin in....

If you don't find a fix, there is a way to skip the sewers.
There are two places in the northern woods where you can climb out (Athletics 4 is required). The easiest place is slightly southwest of the campfire. You will see part of the mountain wall jutting out - start climbing at the end of that spot. You'll need to backflip a few times, and carefully walk across the top of that thin cliff to the main mountain wall. A couple more backflips, and you'll be on the top.
At this point, the enemies you encounter will be more difficult than those in the northern woods; they'll be those you'd encounter on the western road/northern swamp area. Continue south west until you reach the west gate; you'll be able to enter Fargrove here.
Spoiler:
If you'd prefer, you can jump way ahead in the game by getting a moonstone, going to Aryndale, etc. before entering Fargrove. Having a moonstone will allow you to use moonbridges to enter and exit Fargrove at will. Combine that with a bit more climbing, and you can finish your class training quests before bothering to do any other quests (unless you choose a third tier from the eastern houses).

Graphics?
Does your computer meet the specs required to run the game?
You might be able to adjust the settings for graphics, or lower the resolution and see if you see an improvement, in "options".
I recommend starting a new topic for this question. This way people with similar issues, can look up "Graphics problem" when they do a search, and find similar problems and solutions, if this is a graphics problem.
I think its a graphics problem because it sounds like you didn't notice this until entering sewers, which might be a different "load" on the video card, than before.
Good luck!

I would lean more toward RAM. I have a similar problem (though not to that extreme). Try turning off all background programs. Before I can play this game, I have to restart my computer (disconnected from the internet), and turn off all background programs (including firewall and virus scan - ONLY do this after making sure you are DISCONNECTED from the internet). That should help your computer run the game more smoothly.
If you are certain that you have enough RAM, then just make sure that you don't have any programs that are heavily draining it while you play the game. If your virus scan is scanning, that will drain most of your computers resources (you really should do nothing during a virus scan). I've even seen web browsers drain 250mb of RAM, so just check and find out what is draining the most.
