Opinions?

My opinion on this and all social reform issues is this: everyone is ulimately responsible for his own actions. No one else can cause you to do anything. Pedophiles, drug addicts, and spammers chose, at some point, to waste their lives.

If you give the net access to your life, watch out for your ass(ets)! Otherwise, you willingly leave yourself open to the consequences.

People make their own choices - nobody put a gun to my head and said use the internet (psst - actually there is, he is looking away right now - send help HELP eeehh - nevermind )

No really - people should start taking responsibility for their actions and act acordingly instead of saying that they couldn't help themself.

IMO the net is a wonderfull invention (Thanks Al Gore - you did good ) wich has helped me imensly with the search for information and the added bonus of meeting people from all around the world.

I believe that people are attacking more the freedom which we have on the net, not the net themselves. The thing is though, they becoming hipocrites int he process. For them to know of the content of the internet, they would have to use it, otherwise they would be working of things they see, and then that would be spying. Either way, I'm with the whole freedom thing. Like Xan said, nobody put guns to our head. If we want to use it, and risk using "evil", as they put it, then let us. But if it the content you think is evil, then don't deal with it. Put up firewalls, and safety proticol so people can't use your computer to get that content.

I find it very strange.

The only person anybody has to blame for an addictioin is themselves. If somebody prefers jaywalking to walking up to a crossing is it the car manufacturer's fault when they get runover? Crap!!!!!

I read somewhere once that the tendencies to addiction can be hereditory. I did not understand this to mean you are a born smoker or gambler but there is a genetic weakness to overindulge or become obsessed, choose your poison. I will probably get flamed for this because I cannot quote or even remember the publication, but I would not be surprised if this were true, though. This could be a subject for a nurture nature debate...

Re the internet. I can understand the downsides that are causing the hysteria, but as the article said - there will always be people who oppose technical progression. We have the right to freedom of speech - as long as we respect that others have opinions, that will be just as plausible, but no less right or wrong. As long as they are legal...

Regarding the paedophile discussion, like any pornography or perverse publication, it is available if you want to go looking for it. It does not jump at you out of your desk top. Do not blame the internet.

Let's face it, these 'rings' were in existance before the internet and more of them have been identified and prosecuted because they are easier to identify and track down.

Regarding the net being antisocial and a reason for marriage breakdown. When the husband/wife did not have the net to blame for marital breakdowns they had the pub, working hours, football, money etc etc

I just think it could all get a little hysterical until another poison comes along....

I saw a mathematical proof once, I believe it went something like this...

A girlfriend requires time and money. Therefore

women = time x money

And everyone knows

time = money

thus

women = money x money

And of course money is the root of all evil

women = evil


Sadly it fails right at the first assumption, because women = time + money, thus rendering the following proof inaccurate. Nice try though
