11 more days, folks!
In 11 more days, Tolkien comes to the silver screen, purist interpretations and literary violation charges notwithstanding.
I can't wait! It resonates with the words "Blockbuster."
I kind of feel this message board is the true Ground Zero for "Fellowship." I found my way to GB because of my interest in BG2, and who can deny Tolkien's influence in the creation of the D&D franchise from which the BG2 derives its origin? Anyway, I'm sure we'll come up with our own reviews post 12-19, but I'm confident the general tone will be one of praise, satisfaction, and relief.

Oh Man, can't wait. I'm dying to see it. Rivendill and Hobbiton look amazing. They haven't shown what Minas Tirith is too look like in the trailers.
Wood fits Frodo's part perfectly, atleast in appearence. The others look like what most of us must have imagined.

Sad thing is only 2 of us have read the book.
The rest want to see it first and then maybe give the book a try.
But 6 of them say they loved Potter so they might as well try Tolkien.
Annoys the hell out of me them comparing potter to tolkien!

Same here, but I think that ultimately the hype generated by Potter will affect Fellowship in a positive way. "Potter" might serve as an unintended but nonetheless timely "Hobbit"-like introduction to the fantasy milieu into which LotR is fully steeped, compelling those initially turned off by fantasy to go see Frodo because of their recent experience with Potter.Originally posted by Fas:

I wasn't too convinced about Wood at first, but I've seen a few clips now and I think he will be good. You're right though, the rest of the casting is spot-on, especially Viggo Mortensen, IMO he is perfect for Aragorn.Originally posted by ThorinOakensfield:

Can't wait!
Does anyone know if movie theaters give away their posters? Like the large ones inside, that could reach from ceiling to floor in my room? Or how 'bout the ones outside, that I can put on my roof for planes to read? Do they give them away?

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
I can't wait. I read a Newsweek review of LOTR today by a writer who never read the book in the first place. The review is largely positive, so I reckon the movie should be very good.
In the trailer, Arwen is sort of portrayed as a warrior princess, and she says only one thing, "If you want him, come and get him" or something of that sort. Can you guys imagine Arwen as a warrior princess? I can't.
Also, many of my friends who read LOTR said that Aragorn looked too old and rugged in the movie. I keep telling them that rangers are weather-worn and supposed to look haggard and beaten. They just won't understand.
Who do you think it's going to make more money at the box office? LOTR or HP?

If you're in the right place at the right time talking to the right person, yes At least, they have been known to, when they don't need them anymore - after all, they don't have any further use for them. Really depends how much your local cinema likes you Our student cinema had a Saving Private Ryan standee for a while, that we got from the local OdeonOriginally posted by Gaxx_Firkraag:

LotR. Ok, so HP has a dedicated fan base... but nowhere near as much as LotR. The hype is immense.Who do you think it's going to make more money at the box office? LOTR or HP?
Plus it'll make more in the "opening weekend" because they're cheating and releasing it on a Wednesday, so they get two more days

There was a HUGE fuss over that on LotR fan websites all over the 'net. Calling her Xenarwen and the like...But Peter Jackson says that isn't the image that comes across in the film at all. At first they did aim for a more warrior-like role for Arwen; but over the course of production, apparently they toned it down so she's much closer to the book portrayal. I think that at first, they were just trying to give Arwen a more active role, since admittedly, strong female characters in LotR are nonexistent, with the exception of Galadriel; and even she just has a kind of cameo...(For better female characters read The Silmarillion.) And even now, Arwen is more visible in the film than in the book, but not to the warrior-princess stage. This is what I've read and heard different places; we'll see how it turns out.Originally posted by humanflyz:

That scene where she says "If you want him, come and claim him" is at the ford of Bruinen. In the book Frodo clambers onto Glorfindel's horse and speeds across the ford on his own, and once on the other side, he unsheathes Sting and cries: "By Elbereth and Luthien the fair, you shall have neither the ring, nor me!" While being faced down by the Ringwraiths and suffering terrible agonies from his recent wound. It's powerful stuff. When I read that I just got chills. It's the first time we see Frodo as a real hero -- a vital moment. So the way they're doing it in the movie, having Arwen carry him over the ford and defend him, really flattens the impact of the scene and, I think, completely defeats the purpose of that moment. Why did they think it necessary to make that kind of change?? I realize things have to be changed of necessity in the transition from novel to film. But as I see it that change is not only totally unnecessary; it also dulls the story itself in some way.
10 days and counting!
loner, I agree with you there. I see no point in changing the ford scene with the Ringwraiths. It's bad enough that Glorfindel is no where to be seen, or his horse (anyone remember his name?), but Arwen rescuing Frodo across the river? C'mon, he's suppose to be the hero of the film. I dunno, perhaps it'll make better sense when eventually I see this moment in its context. 'Just gotta keep reminding myself that this movie is Peter's Jackson's interpretation of Tolkien's vision, not Tolkien's vision itself. The cast certainly resemble what most readers think they must have looked like, but that IMO is thanks to Tolkien, who described his characters vividly both in appearence and in action, and left little, ironically, to the imagination in this area.

I am excited about the movie also, I read the original books back in middle school, and reread it over and over, because frankly I got kind of obsessed. But anyway the movie looks really awesome, just hope they don't screw it up, because otherwise I am going to be seriously disapointed. Harry Potter, why should I watch that trite group think piece of poopy, when I can use my money on something like the Lord of the Rings which has actually been around for a couple of years(and which has not lost it's allure even now).
I have finally gotten my brother to read the bloody novel, and hopefully he should be done with the novel trilogy before the movie comes out. Harry Potter does not begin to compare with Lord of the Rings(assuming of course they do not screw it up I mean). Anyway I am really excited with the movie coming out.

I care not for endings or beginnings, but for the eternal and infinite spaces of the universe, and for the endless exploration of eternity, and mysteries which I will find plumbing the infinite depths.

I guess they gave Arwen a bigger role since there aren't too many females in the movie, except Galadriel.
From what i remember the only contribution that Arwen made in the The Fellowship was at Rivendill where Frodo met her. Then in the last book she fought along side her brothers to defeat the Nazgul at the Siege of Gondor.
