EDIT: Vhalior does have a background story significance though, so you might want to consider him too.

My party tends to consist of, in the following order:

Morte
Dak'kon
Annah
Fall From Grace
Nordom

Note: Nordom can be hard to get, but he is well worth it, especially if you have FFG in your party

My party is usually the same as DW's. That's the order in which they become available. If you want Ignus in your party, he is available shortly after Fall-From-Grace becomes available. Nordom is very difficult to find, and you will probably need to consult a walkthrough if you don't manage to run into him by coincidence. Vhailor is the last to be available.

On my first play through I missed Nordom completely - big mistake as he is one of the funniest rpg characters ever. But my party looked like this:

Morte
Annah
FFG
Ignus
Vhailor

Dropped Dak'kon for Vhailor, felt pretty bad about it after though.

Morte
Dakkon
Annah
Fall from grace
Ignus
Vhailor (dropped Ignus)

I'm sorry for the confusion. I'd like to know what order the NPCs are met in the game, not who y'all take in your parties.

As Von Dondu also pointed out, the list I gave you is the order in which the NPCs can be recruited.

As far as the remaining NPCs go, Ignus can be brought into your party soon after recruiting FFG, and Vhailor is the last NPC you'll meet, about two thirds of the way into the game.

So the order of availability is as follows:
Morte
Dak'kon
Annah
FFG
Ignus
Nordum
Vhailor

I go for banter, hence my party choices. Prior to getting Nordum, though, I'd suggest, at least, temporarily recruiting Ignus, because there are certain advantages.
