Joining to the fun

After almost two years of playing still new versions Fall From Heaven (a brilliant fantasy mod for Civ4) I decided to make a break and try some RPG instead. I cleaned the dust from my ICW2 and gave it a go.
I'm a semi-noob and by that I mean that I played few chapters of the game a few years ago. At that time I played a full 6 member party.
This time I wanted to test out an illusionist-rogue, dual-wielding small blades, a variation of one of my favourite RPG characters in different fantasy settings. I picked a gnome (regular, not deep gnome) and started him as a rogue. I went solo, just to see how he plays out. I'm still on the first screen in Targos, he's already level 3 and rogue1/ranger1/illusionist1. From now on I'm planning to promote him only in illusionist class.
At first I thought this would be a test for my little friend and then I'll start over with a full party. But as I'm having fun I changed my mind and don't want to give up this game. So I plan to join the next character maybe on screen two, at lord Whatshisname, or when my gnome reaches lvl4. Then maybe I'll drop in another hero at some point.
The second character will probably be a dwarf Templeguard, he should nicely complement my gnomic trisckster, both in gameplay and in RPG that's going on in my head
I ask for advice - are there any dire consequences of this playstyle that I falied to see? I'm not a powergamer, so I can allow for a large margin of ineffectiveness.
And for something completely different - how do you sneak attack? Is it doable with one character only? I only managed to outsmart and surprise a barrel. It didn't see it coming :mischief:
