The walkthrough tells you to trigger the candles in a certain order, if you didn't touch them.

Try playing with them based on the clues written on a nearby note until it works.

Hi there - I don't use the walkthrough or any 'method' for the candles - basically I keep hitting them in a random order, maybe 3 or 4 times each or more, and I've never been stuck there long enough to get bored, so you could try that :)

When all the candel lights are off...turn on the left one(it will turn on the middle and the right candels)...them turn on the middle one(it will turn on the left candel) ;)

No, there is no quest.

Why don't you try and go to the save when you first enter the mansion. Then from that point, follow the walkthrough's instructions.

Grout's library

I hope that you have got out of here. I can agree with Leviathan - I now hit the candles at random and the door opens.

Are you running a patch - if not it might be worth installing 5.7

I've been doing it this way for eons, and it always works.

First, you don't know how long the guy has been playing with it, so it's initial state is unknown. The sequence, though, facing the wall, is right, left, and center.

Having said that, it doesn't always work because the guy has been playing with it. So do this. Hit right, left, and center. If it doesn't open, try the center one twice more. if it still doesn't work, go back and repeat the sequence, again trying the center 3 times. If it still doesn't work. Hit the left one twice, go back and do it again. I've never had to complete the third pass, and most of the time I get on the first run-through, after hitting the center stick once or twice.

Of course, after all that, if it still hasn't opened, then I suppose random is as good an option as any.

Or, you could try not to kill the guy playing with the lights and toggle the left then right, followed by right then left letting him toggle the middle one once in between your own. That should pretty much cover all possible sequence of the 3 lights after 2-3 cycles.
