Best weapon?

I have seen many people claiming that the flail of ages is the best weapon, but how can anyone compare ANY weapon to the Crom faeyr? Just getting 25 in str raises THAC0 by 4, and 5 more since its a +5 weapon. And the damage at 25 str is a lot. And +5 weapons can hurt anything in the game..

So HOW can a flail be better? not even the Carsomyr is close, since using Crom faeyr dualwielding with another weapon is awesome, as you still have 25 in str with the other weapon as well (better THAC0)

Well, what about dual-wielding Crom Faeyr and FoA...

Yes the crom is good, but so are many other weapon. Celestial fury can stun opponents and how are you going to get out of that even if you have crom faer? Staff of magi is nice since it makes you invisible and gesen bow is a great short bow. Its really up to yourself to decide wich weapon you prefer to call "best".

Who needs stun when you KILL the opponent with one hit?!

My thought exactly, Rapier. And dont forget wielding Crom faeyr instead of celestial Fury gives AT LEAST 6 better THAC0, as well as massive damage bonuses.

yes against golems (and little foes) if you want to kill golems buy Rod of Smiting. the Celestial Fury also has a chance of dealing 20 x-tra elec. damage you can get in when you want in the game and most classes can use it and you don't have to put 50 of your best items into it just to make it.

And, you get the celestial fury waay earlier.

The facts remains. Ok, you have to give up 2 strength giving items, and thats bad, but the weapon itself is well worth it.

It is onehanded, so you can wield another weapon in the other hand, which can use the strength (THAC0) bonus as well

It is a +5 weapon, so it can penetrate more magic shields than lesser weapons.

It gives 25 in str, good damage and THAC0

With this weapon you will have th best THAC0 in the game, about 6 less than that katana

And it has a number of onehit kills, on trolls and golems..

The important things is the great damage and THAC0, no great specials except this(trolls dies from one hit anyway), but to be able to hurt almost anything and hit easy too ( i soloed the red dragon with the crom faeyr, without ANY attack magic).

That katana has some good specials, but 5 percent for additional 20 damage? thats one in twenty! The warhamme hits for 10-20 more each hit, as well as more often!

i rest my case..

The sentience:

first of all not all agree that it pays of to forge the CromF'er (lots of topics)
when you stand with the CromF'er and the Celestial fury in your hand it is obvious that the CromF'er is better.
but....

the Celestial fury you can get in the begining of chapter 2 the CromF'er what chapter 6 or chapter 7.

the Celestial fury has lightning strike and blind.

the Celestial fury can stun the foes nomatter what they are.

+3 is not bad and hits almost any foe.

you still have the hammer of thunder and even your mages can all have a min. strength of 18

most classes can use this baby.

these things makes me choose the Celestial fury instead of the CromF'er

all rise!

This topic is now a battle betwen the Crom Fayer and Celestial fury. All because of my post. I think I woulb chose the celestial though, if I had to chose that is. Luckily thats why you have a party. Korgan with Crom and Haer`dalis with Celestial. And me With equalizer.

i think the fury is a really good wapon,
sure Crom gives lots of good bonuses but:

- u get it very late in the game
- u most sac. some good equipement for it

U can get the Fury very fast and is a good wapon one of the best.
Although the Blackrazor and Crom do some more damage.
The only (real BIG) problem is that u get them to late in the game.

And Also the Staf of the Magi is really good
it is just a must for any spelcaster.

Yeah, that's the main problem with Crom, you have to give up the Gaunts of OgrePower and the girdle...

The reason the flail of ages is the best weapon is not because of the thaco or damage bonus but because of the Slow (no save effect) which happens on 1/3 of the hits with the flail. With this slow effect any opponent (except those protected from slow like monk) is considerably easier. I published some of my weapon tests on this forum earlier (see Absolute best weapon post)and always the FOA came out on top, frankly i was suprised at this myself. In every combat the One Wielding the FOA beat out the other weapons. Also the celestail fury is not as good a weapon when you are fighting high level opponents as the stun effect is automatically saved against due to high saving throws, but it is still an excellant weapon nonetheless.

I think there is not a best weapon, but some really good weapons you can choose depending on your group.
Some of my favourite:
Impaler
Wave
+3 throwing dagger
Gnasher

The currently ongoing weapon tests are based on "killing a high level fighter". Throughout the game there are different opponents weapons have different effect on them.
Let us consider enemy spellcasters. The slow effect of FOA is not a big deal against them. But strangly enough the FOA is still one of the best weapons even against a spellcaster! The 3 type of additional damages "hit through" stoneskin (and if hasted, they will broke down all mirror images) and disrupt spellcasting.
Another similarly useful weapon is the Gnasher+2.

Another idea: most enemies don't wear prot+2 rings, so their save vs spell are not so good (not less than 6). That raises the effectiveness of any weapons which rely on such side effects (Celestial Fury in the first place).

Good points Kovi and i agree entirely.

I personally am a fan of the dragons breath +4 halberd, i just wish you could get it earlier than underdark-5 types of extra damage, +4 weapon, faster than normal polearms...as a halberd type of guy I really like tht one...

I would say that the staff of magi is the most powerful weapon in the game. A close second would be staff of woodlands , holy avenger, blackrazor, and sling of everand. You can get staff of magi, and the sling and the holy avenger early in the game. I would pick celestial fury over crom faeyr because you can et celestial fury really early. By the time you make the crom faeyr you'll have only a few vampires, golems, rakashas, demons and a dragon. Unless you leave all the chap 2 quests till chap 6. Also i prefer to have all my fighters to have about 19+ str.
