Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) is a computer role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. It was released for the Xbox on July 15, 2003, for Microsoft Windows on November 19, 2003, and later for Mac OS X. KotOR is the first computer role-playing game set in the Star Wars universe. The sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords, was developed by Obsidian Entertainment at BioWare's suggestion[1] as BioWare wanted to focus on their own intellectual properties.

I was just reading this. Is the bold part of the quote really true? There have been Star Wars games since the first movie was produced in 1977. I think it might even be safe to say there have been Star Wars games since the dawning of pc gaming itself. Somehow I find it difficult to believe that it took 25 years for the first RPG to emerge.

I remember watching a TV program about Star Wars video game titles which ranges from the 80s all the way to the present day a long time ago. Most of the titles mentioned are either side-scrolling platform games, FPSes, combat flight games or action games. Heck they even have a Star Wars themed chess game. No RPGs were present until KOTOR came along in 2003, so you can say that it corroborates with Wikipedia's entry.

Wow. I had no idea.

I have the rest of this week for myself, so I think I'm going to give it another spin today. It's been some years. I haven't tried KOTOR 1 on WINE (Linux) yet, and The Sith Lord Restoration Project is just around the corner too. Might as well see how well the game engine performs on my Ubuntu rig. </geek>
