Performance Issues

I have recently started playing The Witcher, but started suffering from "choppy graphics" which I could only get rid of by lowering my resolution to 800 x 600 and using the minimum settings.
The laptop I am using (Lenovo ThinkPad T60p) has the following specs (of importance):
Inte Dual Core @ 2.33GHz
2GB RAM (No overclocking advice please. I don't want Bloodlines (which I play often) to give me grief.)
ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5250
Running it on Windows XP Professional Edition, with Service Pack 3 and currently have over 40GB of free space.
I read the "Load Times" thread which was recently made here, but I am unsure if the advice provided there would help me. I have no problem with the load times after I put the setting at minimum, just wondering why I have to play it so low and if there are anyways to improve them while still retaining the game as "playable" and fast.
I have my suspicions as to what the problem may be, but it'd be nice to experience the game with more of its' graphical prowess apparent.
