I have 2 runes at the beginning of chapter 3. I can't remember where I got them....I think I had a Sun rune early in ch 2.

You can buy two different stones for steel swords from the blacksmiths in chapter 2 & 3. There are also containers that have stones/runes inside so open everything. The main boxer offers a choice of stones/runes as rewards in these chapters. Two different silver sword runes are also available to buy early in the game from several NPC's (Thaler?) but the third stones/runes for either sword show up later, like chapter 4. You'll get better silver swords as rewards by that time so the runes are less important. There are also better steel swords available later on, at least one in chapter 2 even. IMO, the best steel rune sword is forged with three red stones and is available in chapter 2 for very little money.

you can get three red stones in chapter 1. Spoiler Prelude: one for fighting with Vesamir, 1 for burying leuvardens friend in the chapel, 1 in the ghoul monster trophy lair (guard says people are going to knock the walls down and open the place up for looting after you report on the ghouls...if you return there is more cavern).End Spoiler

I think Vessemir will give you the red meteorite (not a rune) if you go through every dialogue option after the fight, if you chose to fight the frightener.

So if you manage to find the three red stones in act 1, the dwarf blacksmith at the Inn will forge the red meteorite sword for something like 600 orens. Since you don't even have a silver sword available in act 1, it's the best you can do at that point and it is still very good until much later in the game...

I've never needed to use runes on the silver sword. I usually pump up the Aard sign right away and the coup de grace works with either sword on monsters or humans. Even a rusty steel sword without buffs will work.

I don't get the red stone from Vesimir either. I played it both ways, going with Triss and going with Vesemir and went thru all of the available dialog with vesimir at the end and got no red stone. I don't thnik he likes me...

It might be in the Enhanced Edition only.

I can confirm that because I've played the original ages ago and Vesemir didn't give out any red meteorite. Only in Chapter 1 can you get all three of them.

It's in the EE version that the order of acquiring the red meteorites differs slightly.

The GB walkthrough does say that Vesemir will give you the red stone after all dialog with him is done. I just have not been able to get him to give me one.

I, too, have never received a Red Moonstone from Vessimer, even tho I have questioned him to the point of having all selections grey-out.

I have the EE version, which I suspect changed this. Can get one on CH3, tho.

I got a red meteorite from him. I don't know about a moonstone. You have to fight the frightener with him. He is thanking you for not siding with triss.

OK. It's official. You do get the red stone from Vesimir in the Great Hall during the really big dialog session with him near the end of the prologue. The walkthrough says to exhaust all dialog with him but you don't actually get the stone after completing the entire dialog, as the walkthrough suggests. You get it after a specific part of the dialog. You can go straight to the specific topic right away and you can stop talking to him after you get the stone if you want. The walkthrough author(s) may be trying to be subtle by not throwing out a spoiler here and that's OK with me. I won't either.

I saved the game just before the dialog session as part of my test and, just to be thorough, after I found the right dialog (it's not a trick) I reran that save using version 1.3, the EE unmoded and the EE moded with the "insane difficulty" mod. I got the exact same results at the same point in all three versions. I suppose there is a chance that, because it was a version 1.3 save, there may have been a different result if I had started with a fresh EE game. But my previous experience playing around with save games is that the save version has no impact when playing across game versions.

One more thing, although I didn't test it. The dialog doesn't appear to be related to which path you take in the final show down. You should get the stone whether you fight the frightner with Vesimir or head down to the lab with Triss. Geralt ends up in the Great Hall at the same dialog point after either path is completed.

Anyhoo, my work here is done. Thanx for all the input...
