The first beholder you run across after assembling the rod is the Eye. You equip the rod and use it on him (her?).

I remember something coming after me to kick my ass after I found something in the lower right corner of that map. Was that the leader thingy? Don't remember. I can imagine you could kill him without the device. Maybe that's what you did.

You can kill him without the device, but it is a very hard fight that lasts a long time. Then again, this is one of the first side quests I do, so it might not be so hard if you take him later on in the game.

You would notice the unseeing eye pretty well I think considering that it's the only beholder that initiates the dialogue mode, even though it just speaks a curiously unwitty threath.

hmmm.. guess mazzy with the Shield of balduran made short work of him then...
but I haven't got any entry in my Journal(or any experience) - do I get that once I return the device to the avatar-guy in the dungeon ??

--- But none of them ever spoke to me...
They just attacked at whooped they own arses agaist the shield.. *almost* wasn't fun at all

It's a hard battle, because he doesn't fight like a regular beholder. He's a caster kinda like the elder orbs.

Yeah, now I remember. I walked up to him with my main wearing the shield of Balduran and the basterd casts imprisonment on me... Hello game over screen... Image

Yeah. I had to use the demi-lich strategy to beat him (thank goodness for spell immunity scrolls). No real difference in exp though. Blasting him with the rod is just as effective and less time consuming.

Yeah, the rod goes back to the temple (heaps XP). It's worth revisiting the eyeless area again to kill Gaal - I seem to remember he has some nice stuff.

Pengman:
There was a glitch in my game (pre-patch, I haven't tried it post-patch). The first time I did it, I saved after retrieving the second half of the rod (but before the Unseeing Eye came and found me). I came back to the game later (loaded it), wandered around awhile, and never found the prick. So, I reloaded a ways back, did the quest up to joining the rod back together and waited. In 1 minute, the Eye found me. It must have been a bug in the game.

And what about this glitch:
When I brought back the rift Device, the cut scene happened twice! Result: 2 Saving Graces and twice the experience bonus!

I had the same glitch as Omar..the unnamed god appeared twice...had to repeat the dialogues for each manifestation but the second one didn't disappear..I only got experience points for the first one..
