Importing Characters

I have loved this game since I got it; but I am totally lost on how to import a character from the orignal Baldur's Gate to the Shadows of Amn game. Everytime I have tried it i do something wrong I guess because they do not import to the next Game, I do not play in the Multi-Player so I don't know if that has something to do with it or not. Could someone help me with this and explain it to me like you would a 3 yr old. Help would be appreciated greatly
