Wizardry 7 Gold Identify

Post by RobinHood70 »

Am I doing something wrong when using the Identify spell in Wizardry 7 Gold? It never seems to do anything. Granted, I'm still low-level and can only cast Level 1 Identify at this point, but you'd think that would at least get the potions.

What I'm doing to cast it is clicking on the magic book, selecting the appropriate character, selecting the Identify spell, and then clicking Cast. It never prompts me for a specific item or anything, so I'm sort of assuming it works on all items in the inventory. But after I'm done, all items that had a question mark in my inventory before I cast the spell remain unidentified.

Is it just a level issue, or am I doing something wrong?

Level issue. Some potions are level 2, 3, and 4. Infuriating, isn't it? Take solace in the fact that you aren't the only one who suffered through it. ;)

Actually, I WAS doing something wrong. I hadn't clued in that you have to cast it from your character sheet, not the main screen. (In point of fact, I hadn't clued in that you COULD cast from your character sheet.)

You'll still find that many potions require higher levels for identification. Hell, I remember some potions taking over 15 levels to identify (but they were stat-raising stuff.) This is old-style gaming: nothing comes free, from better or worse.

Hehehe...no need to explain "old-style" gaming here. Not as old as you are, but I can still remember playing Wizardry I on the Apple ][.

No one's as old as I am. ;) But yes, Wizardry's been around for a while. Like you, I played the first ones. One of my first reviews was of Wizardry III for PC Magazine, if I recall correctly. I have to say that I like a number of the modern RPG conveniences, like mapping and key-binding, but there was an individuality and imagination to some of the titles back then that has eluded the resolutely "realistic" RPGs of recent times.

For example, you would never expect a modern RPG to possess a high level spell that brings in a divine, wish-granting avatar in the form of a duck.

I realize this thread is a few years old, but I am getting back into playing Crusaders. Yes, I know-a little late, but I never finished it years ago and decided to do it now that my kids are older! I have the same problem as the original poster with casting an identify spell. But, how do you cast it from your character sheet. I have a ton of potions that I would like to know/use and does identify work for books? I have a lot of books and my character doesn't seem to be able to "assay" much and I don't want to waste learning a spell on a level up when I may already have a book for it. Thank-you!
