Animal cruelty

This argument has been hot at school, whether or not we should be consuming meat products when animals are supposedly "slaughtered with malice and by cold hearted men." I watched some videos...I'm amazed at what I have seen, and went to Kentucky Fried Cruelty.com, and sort of laughed at the way they show KFC, but anyway, the point is, what do you guys believe on animal rights and steroidal growth and abuse for faster marketing?
I'm not stating my position yet for arguments sake.

It's unfair but hey that's the way it is... there's no possible alternative, especially since nowadays people have this crazy idea that no one should starve and that human life should be valued and other bulls--t

there's no possible alternative
Why is that?

The alternative is to eat vegetables, but we all know those don't taste like meat. Meat is for our personal pleasure.

You really think people would agree to stop eating meat and eat vegetables instead? So no, it's not a real alternative

I'm just remarking that saying "There's no alternative" and "People won't agree to that alternative" are two entirely different statements.

I have been a vegetarian, basically because for a long time I did not care for the taste of meat, and I was repelled by factory farming due to its cruelty, and use of hormones/antibiotics.
However, now it is possible to obtain free range meat. To me this is a compromise. I do not think it is wrong, in principal, to eat animals. In the rest of the ecosystem it boils down to "eat or be eaten," what makes humans so special? My problem is, as noted above, with the horrors of factory farming. Free range (or hunted meat) *is* an alternative.

There's also bioengineered meat which is basically meat that was cloned from an animal but ONLY the meat part.
IIRC, Peta supports this.

Would it be ok to have free range humans that are eaten?

I don't know enough about bioengineered meat to comment, though the idea itself makes me uneasy.
Another reason I prefer ranged meat is because agribus has been devastating to small-scale farmers worldwide.
As far as PETA goes, I don't care what they support, or don't support. They are nothing but a bunch of publicity-seeking wingnuts who give genuine advocacy groups a bad name. These are the same idiots who wanted Ben and Jerry's to use breast milk in icecream.
@Claudius,
I know where you are going with that particular line of argument. However, cannibalism isn't really my kind of thing, sorry.

No there isn't. Not yet, at least

This is true. Farmers slaughter chickens because they hate them. It's a little strange, really. A while ago, I got in a conversation with a recent high-school graduate - really bright kid, graduated top of her class from a private school, captain of both the debate and handball teams, had so many scholarships to prestigious universities lined up, they would have reached from here to the moon. Proverbially speaking. I don't think she was the most intelligent person I've ever spoken to, but she was certainly in the top five.
Our conversation slowly drifted towards our plans for the future. That's when she told me she wanted to become a farmer. I was a little surprised - that girl had never known manual labour in her life, her hands were delicate, she had a tall, lean figure which resembled a blade of grass. When I politely inquired why she was drawn to that particular profession, her face darkened, she looked down and said, "I hate chickens. I can't stand the little ****s. If every day of my life, I can make them suffer, torture them, and humiliate them, I shall live a happy life. I feel nothing but spite and malice towards those creatures."
I still talk to her from time to time.

I personally live in an area where meat is running in my backyard woods, and that I will not mind eating. However, after viewing PETA's investigation videos as well as the seeing the way the workers slammed the poor chickens against the wall, I am standing up against this and becoming a vegetarian (again). Also, after reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, about how workers fell into the vats and were mixed in with meat, I threw up in my mouth and now refuse to eat anything that I didn't personally hunt.

Sorry, meant to say its in development. I dunno how far they've gotten with it, but I do know it's a working theory for now.

It does have merits. We could always use Deathrow inmates as a food supply. Would solve two different problems. But tomany people are "sheep". They want what is easy and dont really want to think.

Given the lives many prisoners have led...would you really want to eat them...
There'd be a new illness... "Mad Con Disease"

Amen to that, lady. Actually, eating any human from the industrial world, convict or not, is probably a bad idea. When I see how most people are using their bodies as garbage dumps, I understanf why wolves haven't attacked humans in about 150 years...

That alone is enough for me to be against it. PETA is - as DWs says - nutjobs.
I don't think eating aminals is cruelty anymore then it is cruelty that animals eat each other.
Sure some parts of production could be more "kind" for lack of better word - however remember that when PETA brings forth stories, they are the worst of the worst, and not the mainstay - and they are usually spun as least as much as if Fox news made a report on Obama. There are many rules regarding food production for most "western" countries, which get more and more restrictive to prevent stuff like this happening - and yes, some people break them to make money, but that happens in all aspect of life. It is a flaw in some, not in all.
So just because some people can't figure out how to behave and treat the animals poorly does not mean every single or even a majority of other companies and producers does.
And frankly - if people didn't provide me with steak and pork and poultry and venison and deer, I'd go out and slaughter those buggers myself cause they taste so good and I have better weapons then they have.

I know, and that's too bad, otherwise I'd gladly eat the PETA activists (not their brains, though).

I thought they died out years ago. Something about animal marriages....
