Does anyone else have trouble deciding who to keep in they're party besides me? It was tough to get rid of Yoshimo for Jan. I now have Myself(Mage), Minsc, Anomen, Aerie, Jan and Jaheira. I am looking for Keldorn to drop off the ****y Anomen, but my Rep. is so low I don't think he would join anyway. What is the BEST combo for a group?

I think a good party formation is
Me (babarian)
Minsc
Keldron
Jaheira
Jan
Edwin
I din't took that dwarf because i'm a good fighter to replace him. But i think if you are non fighter you should put him in your party
I took minsc because he is good fighter a ranger and he is a main character and i LOVE BOO
i got Keldorn in my party because the simple fact that i want a paladin and het can carry the camorysorblabla +5
Jan is a bit of a mage and he can sometimes fil in Edwin with some magic arrows and protection and he is a hell of a good thief with all those gaddets of him and i like just like him
Edwin is one of the best mages in the whole game so that why i got him i don't like him because he is evil but.........
Now you know my party i hope i helped you a little.

Okay, speaching from a Mages point of view, i.e. me, Jan is SOOOO invaluble. Later on his is the best and way better than poxy Yoshimo. Anomen (uphimself little wa**er) drop him. Either get Edwin, damn good mage, or you can pick up Keldorn, but Edwin's multi-powers make your mage seem small, so I dropped him, for now anyway.

Main character; Kensai/Mage
Secondary Character; Cleric/Thief
(Do this trough Multiplayer)
Pick up one NPC for their quests (where necessary) but run the game with just those two. Quite difficult until Kensai gets to level 9 and Thief gets to level 14 so that they can be dualed, but well worth the effort.
But that's just my style.

I'd say you've got a fine party going as is. You've got a nice balance between magic and might - With a couple items Jaheira makes a fine tank, as does Anomen, and if you keep your reputation up Anomen will become less annoying. Also, since you have none of the evil NPCs, you can get as high a reputation as you like and take care of discounts at all the shops. The rest depends on whetther you're the type who will replay a game like BGII or not. If you will, stick with any lineup you like and try different ones later (some characters take a long time to develop fully)if you won't replay, I'd hold onto Jaheira, Aerie, and Jan (multi-classed, need much exp.) and rotate other NPCs in and out of Minsc and Anomen's roles.
*BUT*
the main thing I want to say is that the game is set up so no NPC is useless, and they all can be tremendous assets if played correctly. Remember to ROLEPLAY. Think about your character. Who would he or she like to hang out with? Who would he or she trust? Easily as interesting as the main plot to the game are all the intricacies of interaction the creators have constructed between NPCs. Every time I see someone ask for help in forming a party, 9 out of 10 responses assert what they think is the most POWERFUL party. Pick a party that is fun and engaging for YOU. We're all god-like superheroes by the end of this adventure....
cheers,
mh

I have kept Minsc & Jaheira and recovered Imoen, as all of these characters were members of my party in BG. I felt that from a roleplaying point of view my character would stick with his loyal party members. That leaves Aerie & Nalia and my character who is a fighter, imported from BG.
This gives a good mix of Fighting strength, healing & mage power, although it is very light on the 'rogue' side. In most cases my fighter is so strong and virtually impervious to magic that he can handle almost everything thrown at him but soloing would be tricky without a thief character ...
However in terms of the BEST combo, I shall have to let you know when I start a new game (if I ever finish this one!) as I shall forget the roleplay & try the best party mix.
Ignoring my current party make-up, I think that a party with mainly specialists ie not multi-class (dual class is different - Imoen & Nalia are basically mages but have some useful thief skills) is generally better BUT if you want a stronger mage or powerful thief (esp re backstabs)as a main character start off as a fighter then dual class to the other class - its tougher to start with but the character will be stronger in the long run (not least in hit points). In BG one of my main characters was a Fighter/Thief - with a high strength & long sword weapon specialisation, once the thief level exceeded the fighter level, he could do SERIOUS backstab damage (>150 damage once with a critical hit - watch those limbs fly!!!).
Good luck in your own quest to find the perfect party - it would be dull if we all thought the same.
