You can cast in armor. However, every piece of armor has a % failure rate. It should be listed on the armor description. Armored Arcana reduces that failure rate by 5%.

You should be aware that you need another character who gets sorcerer or mage levels faster to fulfill the role of the party caster.

Don't wear armor. Just cast mage armor or spirit armor, you'll get a better AC without having to waste feats for armored arcana and can still get bonuses from robes. Near the end you'll even find an armor which allows spellcasting.

Given that you want to keep the levels even (more caster levels usually yield the more powerful characters) I recommend shield dwarf fighter/mage with starting stats 18-18-18-18-3-1, maximize the concentration skill, raise only strength at level up, specialise in 2-handed swords, axes or polearms and take the typical fighter combat feats, you can also choose diviner as specialist school for more spells and have the party's main caster cast mage armor on this character.

Since spontaneous casting is more fun you might like a human fighter/sorcerer more, starting stats 18-18-18-3-3-16. Develop him like the fighter/mage. You can also take paladin instead of fighter levels for a charisma bonus to saving throws and the paladin quest bonus instead of fighter bonus feats and weapon specialisation.
