Hi,
I'm just playing the game through the first time and would like to have Imoen in my party after Spellhold. Now I'm wondering if I should complete all the quests I can before going to Spellhold or not. If i raise too much in levels, will Imoen have a level comparable to mine if I let her join my party after I free her, or will she always be a few levels below me?

I believe it varies a bit. She will almost always be at least a couple levels behind you.
If your effective party level is than 13, she'll have 400,000 experience points. This means, she'll be level 11 Mage/7 Thief. However, if your character level is higher, she'll have more experience.

I got her with 13/7 or 14/7 I don't really remember. I did pretty much all the quests from chapter 2 before moving on and with my uber-build and class I'm so overpowered right now

Imoen has either 400,000 XP or 1,200,000 mage XP depending on the average level in the party. For multiclasses each of the levels counts, so it's nearly impossible to get the experienced Imoen when Nalia is in the party since her 4 thief levels lower the average.

so I guess in order to get the experienced imoen the average experience in my group has to be higher than 1.200.000, or? That sounds pretty high! The experience difference is actually pretty high! I mean 3x difference?! Sounds pretty unfair...

Nah not really. I was at about 1.7 when I went to Brynlaw. Just do the chapter 2 quests.

What do you mean by that?

I think he means that his main character had 1.7 million experience points.

Yeah that's it. Just do all the quests. I spent about a week on chapter 2 doing quests.

If you have ToB installed, you can almost hit eight million experience before finishing Chapter two (or three).

ToB has different chapters? I was kind of wondering if finishing Shadows of Amn would end the game like BG1. ToTSC was just more quests. Oh and do the quests man, seriously, BG2 is EPIC with so many quests, I'm loving it.

Yeah, ToB adds two more chapters and a large dungeon to the BG2. It's a very different expansion than ToSC. It's, basically,a third and concluding chapter for the protagonist. It would have been much better if the story had been worked into a new game. But, it's definitely worth playing.

And that dungeon is the longest side quest to date. : D
The expansion also, as stated before, sets the experience cap to eight million, which is anywhere from level 31 to 40, depending on class. There is a single new class and each one is also entitled to high level spells or abilities after the three million experience mark.

I'm already now at 1.3 million exp, but i have aerie and jaheira in my team. as both are multiclasses, they don't have that high exp. with those two I probably wont get to an average of 1.2 million exp...
well anyway... I guess it doesn't really matter... The game's fun anyway (actually it's too much fun
thanks for the advice btw!

ah and one more question:
how is it determined when you get weapon proficiency points to spend after a level up?

Warrior classes gain a proficiency point every 3 levels, priest and thieves every 4 and mages every 6.
Which version of Imoen you get back doesn't depend on average XP, only on average level. It's possible to dismiss low level party members for a few seconds just before she rejoins you to get the average level up a little.

do I have to drop them before she starts the conversation about joining or after I accept her and have to remodel my party?
