Just installed it and all I get is a black screen and a crash to the desktop.

Also it came with patch 3 PRE-INSTALLED!

I was reading that all the fan made patches were for patch 2, so what can I do about that?

IIRC, there's a program to de-patch it to patch2. Ask at the forum of Circle of 8, the modders who made the fanpatch. They know quite a lot about the game.
