In All ADnD games, my mages are quite weak, deal a large amount of damage, but made out of broken glass and scotch tape. And, compared to a good warrior, they seem to deal less damage. I see how most people say mages are great, but I can't seem to get their mage.If this is on the wrong forum, please move it to the correct one.

Thank you in advance for any advice or sujjestions.

In IWD2 a sorceror is more powerful.

1 - Chromatic orb, Mage Armor, Sleep (early)
2 - Mirror Image, Cat's Grace, Horror, Web
3 - Fireball, Skull Trap
4 - Emotion Hope, Stoneskin, Improved Invisibility, Malison, Mordenkainen's Missiles, Vitriolic Sphere
5 - Animate Dead, Lower Resist, Sunfire, Chaos
6 - Improved Haste, Shades, Acid storm
7 - Delayed Blast Fireball, Finger of Death, Mordenkainen's Sword
8 - Symbol of Hopelessness, Horid Wilting
9 - Exectutioner's Eyes, Mass Dominate, Wail of Banshee

Those are the spells I found easiest to use and most effective. Notice that many are buffs.

Thanks!

But should I cast buffs when I wake up, or once I'm in battle, or before a big battle or what? What should I usally target, other mages?

1 - Chromatic orb: this one is for trouble makers...mages you might be able to kill with arrows or direct damage spells, but you could use this on mages too. It would also be good to cast at something that deals a lot of damage but has a low reflex save. Like a Yeti or an elite goblin. Tip: save a couple in case your troops are occupied and someone starts beating on your casters.

Mage Armor: this is for arcane casters, monks, and dexers who have higher AC with 4 armor and no dex penalty. Cast at the beginning of the day...If it wears off think about sleeping, but you don't have to

Sleep (early): orcs and goblins go down with this spell..

2 - Mirror Image: Defensive as needed

Cat's Grace: Dexers and those not exceeding dex penalty on armor maybe buff each day like mage armor.

Horror: This is like sleep but it works on everybody with low will saves.. barbarians, NOT undead, trolls, goblinoids, this one turns the tide up to the bridge.

Web: Good to hit mobs approaching you with to pin them. Also good against casters and archers. Next come fireballs etc..
3 - Fireball: good for archers/casters/webbed people

Skull Trap: same more damage less area

4 - Emotion Hope: Long duration cast when you go into a dangerous area, not all day duration though

Stoneskin- cast on tanks so they rest less...example is help them tank Ice Golem

Improved Invisibility- cast on tanks,, not sure if will help sneak attacks

Malison- cast in big battles eg treants where your either using save or else spells or just to make them fail reflex saves on evocation spells

Mordenkainen's Missiles, Vitriolic Sphere: Two direct damage to a target spells...Vitriolic might do splash to your own forces, Mordenkainen's is less damage until very high level.

5 - Animate Dead: all day tough as nails summon

Lower Resist: I would only use this rarely on boss fights..not sure if it works good but it just seemed it would be helpful in magic resistant boss

Sunfire: Either deliberately attract attention or just in case...cast mirror image flee to a secluded location and blow the heck out of who follows you..

Chaos: for low will save foes.

6 - Improved Haste: cast right before big battles awesome spell

Shades: short duration summon but scales to level

Acid storm: Bigger Fireball

7 - Delayed Blast Fireball: Bigger Fireball

Finger of Death: Kind of like a chromatic orb only I think its fortitude so might work well against casters (check the manual if you have it)

Mordenkainen's Sword: excellent spell for foes that are pretty magic resistant...you can kill the guardian with this if you can keep him occupied.

8 - Symbol of Hopelessness: tough battles lay the symbol I think its like a debuff they get a save I believe

Horid Wilting: bigger fireball

9
Exectutioner's Eyes: Cast before big battles where melee wants to shine

Mass Dominate: cast against large groups then they start fighting eachother

Wail of Banshee: cast against large groups to kill them...good with Malison
