Thinking on Starting a Game Soon

Hi everyone, after beating Bg2 so many times, I finally thought about giving the first game a try with Tutu. So I'm thinking about using a party this time, instead of soloing the original game with a fighter/thief. I want to have a medium sized party with a limit of 4 characters including myself. I'm thinking me-a lawful evil monk. Now I need at least one more fighter and 2 other characters. Now I already have one down. I'm going to use shar-teel because of her crazyness and because of her evil nature and excellent use of weapons. That leaves me with 2 characters that I need to fill the gap. I was thinking of using a cleric. How is branwen? You can get her early on and I've heard that she is probably the 2nd best cleric in the game, 1st being viconia. I thought of viconia but she has no health whatsoever. I need someone that can take a few hits.
I also thought about using the 2 psychos-montaron and xzar. What about them? Could they work with shar-teel and a solo monk. If anyone can give me some advice I would be extremely grateful.

As many will tell you, ranged weapons are the way to go in BG. Due to this, I'd go with Coran, a fighter/thief with an amazing 20 for a dexterity score. For a priest I'd use Yeslick (though Tiax is better suited to the feel of your group... that, and he can summon a ghoul). If you feel like having a mage, there is no substitute for Edwin. Then again, with some items to even out his stats, Eldoth would serve as a great candidate too (read: bards CAN backstab in the first BG).
If you want someone that can stand damage, Kagain (available early on, possessing twenty constitution) is your best bet.
Personally, I'd think that a monk would be completely underpowered during the early levels.
Xzar and Monnty would work well with your group, due to their nature, however, it is important to note that Monty can't sneak in anything heavier than leather, can only backstab with weapons a thief can use (same for bard) and that Xzar can't cast Illusion spells.

Shar-teel is a good choice imo. For the general "evil" feel of your party I take it you only want evil characters. Since you limit yourself to 4 chars, you could probably skip having a mage altogether. Like Crenshinibon says, ranged weapons rip most things apart with little problem. Kagain could serve as your tank. 4th spot take Viconia and just keep her out of the fire

Crenshinibon is absolutely right about that; many of the monks advantages won't be there until (very) late in the game, if at all. His AC and magic resistance will be terribly inadequate. Also, where SoA had at least a few items that benefitted a monk, BG1 hasn't any of those.
That doesn't mean it's undoable, but your monk will survive mostly because of the abilities of his fellow partymembers.

TUTU sucks, I seriously recommend using the resolution mod instead

Interesting. I had fun with Tutu, what didn't you like about it? And what's the 'resolution mod'? Does it allow you to play BG in higher resoluion?

Thanks for the advice guys. I figured it out. I made a blade. I've always been a fan of bards in general. His stats are:
Strength-18
Dex-18
Con-16
Int-16
Wisdom-10
Charisma-15
I got pretty good stats for him because I don't like giving any char any lower than 15 intelligence. The rest are almost mandatory.
I decided on going with shar-teel as my primary tank. Monty-Secondary Tank/trap setter and disarmer. Me-Secondary fighter/mage/pickpocket. And finally Xzar-main bombadier mage.
It's just too bad that necromancers cant cast illusion spells like invisibility. If they could xzar would probably still be the 2nd best mage in the game, but then again that's just my opinion.
Oh yeah, and I forgot to ask. Should montaron focus more on disarming traps and setting traps; or should i use him as a backstabber and trap disarmer?

Well, technically you can survive every trap in the game, but it's really up to you. He'd make a good backstabber. Since you're using TuTu, the bard won't be able to backstab anymore.
I think that Dynaheir is the second best mage.
Don't forget that Xzar can't cast mirror image either, so he has virtually no protection.
I'd also go as far as to give your bard 18 intelligence, for the greater chance to scribe scrolls and for more spell slots.
The trap part is up to you. You only need 100 points to successfully set a trap every time.
I personally do not play TuTu, so each game I go without setting traps, so it's fine for me. In fact, I think that they may be a bit too powerful.

The Widescreen Mod is what I'm talking about, it allows you to play vanilla BG/ToSC with any resolution. I don't know why but I like to use it and a mod that increases movement speed instead of TUTU.
