About ScreenShots?

Hmm, I was thinking it would be Very nice to have Alyeid Ruins and Fort Ruins Walk Throughs, but in order to do this I need to do Screenshots. I Tried to do a ScreenShot today of Elenglynn Alyeid Ruin Map using the CNTRL and Printscreen Keys - (by the Way that Place Is Evil, lol ). If it worked I have no idea where it saved to, and would like to know. If it Didn't work I would like to know how to do a ScreenShot in the Game. Also I was Wondering will a Software Program Like GameCam Work while Oblivion is up? Having a Video of a Visit into one of those places would be very cool also.

Any other Thoughts or Advice on this subject would be Greatly Appreciated.

Have Fun Everyone

I do not know if Oblivion automatically saves screenshots anywhere, though it probably does. Try checking your install directory for any directory named screenshots or some such. You could also try your documents/games/ directory. I think it puts savegames there.

In any case, you can always make a screenshot manually with ctrl + Prt Sc. Create a new bitmap file, open it with paint and just ctrl + V to paste it.

I know for a fact Fraps works well for capturing Oblivion.

I use Fraps! using the free, or non-registered version though, will have the word "FRAPS" on your screenshots. I registered to get rid of that element and I think it is worth it.

By the way, I couldn't find where the screenshots might have went, using the non-FRAPS methods, either.

Good luck!

Screenshots are disabled by default in Oblivion. You need to edit the oblivion.ini file to enable them. Always make a backup before mucking with the ini file. It should be in \My Games\Oblivion folder. Change or add the following line:

bAllowScreenShot=1

With screenshots enabled, the Print Screen button should now put screenshots in your Oblivion game folder (probably under Program Files\Bethesda, depending on where you installed it).

Hi, Belthan and thanks! I've looked that one up before to try it. There are two lines that refer to screenshots. Too bad that I didn't have a back-up before I tried experimenting with them! It took awhile to get the game back in order. I don't know which one to change from "0" to "1" though. :o :(

I used to take pictures of the screen using cameras. First with a film camera, and then with the easier digital one. Screenshots are much better! :)

So anyway, should it be only the upper line changed, or the lower one, or both?

It Worked

Hello Fellow Forum Goers,

I followed Belthans instructions below:
Screenshots are disabled by default in Oblivion. You need to edit the oblivion.ini file to enable them. Always make a backup before mucking with the ini file. It should be in \My Games\Oblivion folder. Change or add the following line:

bAllowScreenShot=1

With screenshots enabled, the Print Screen button should now put screenshots in your Oblivion game folder (probably under Program Files\Bethesda, depending on where you installed it).
I found my Ini File for Oblivion, and Changed only :

bAllowScreenShot=0 to
bAllowScreenShot=1

I can Now Make Screenshots of the Game. They get saved as a Bitmap to, C://Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion.

Thanks Belthan for the assist :) :)

There should only be one line with the bAllowScreenShot parameter. If you have two and they are identical (other than possibly the value after the = sign), you should delete one.

Usual disclaimer - always make a backup of your ini file before you edit it, just in case.

I just went looking for "ini" files and this is what I found. Please see attached screenshot. Which one is it now? Pardon me if I seem distracted.

More About ScreenShots...

the .ini File I used was found in ...My Documents/My Games/Oblivion - the file is Called "Oblivion - Configuration Settings".

when you open File Scroll down to:

[Display]
uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart1=3619102270
uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart2=298795731
uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart3=606753662
uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart4=902545923
fDecalLifetime=10.0000
bEquippedTorchesCastShadows=0
bReportBadTangentSpace=0
bStaticMenuBackground=1
bForcePow2Textures=0
bForce1XShaders=0
bHighQuality20Lighting=0
bAllow20HairShader=1 ...

Below is the Command Line I changed from 0 to 1

... bAllowScreenShot=1

I hope this Helps, :)

A couple of notes.

Just so people know, if you use AA, you can't take screenshots the regular way.
However, you can use Fraps, and you don't have the word Fraps written across your screenshots in the free version, that only happens if you use Fraps for videos ;)

Fraps screenshots are higher quality and much less hassle all round. ;)

Oh I See Now!

Okay, I did it! Thanks guys! That was what I was looking for when the other kind distracted me from my intended goal. Now I think my memory tricked me! Seeing the lines about "FullScreen", et cetera, I may have mistaken as being the other screenshot command lines.

Now I have two methods of making them! Coincidently enough, I noticed my game was slowing down, and I took a look and saw that I'd made so many AVI files and screenshots using FRAPS, that I've had to make more room, by transferring to DVD-R discs. Thankfully, my brother had made my computer learn how to do that during his last visit, wheraze before it wouldn't recognize the ability, or the drive, or the discs. So now the blue pie has one pink slice in it, or Pac-Man's mouth is open again. But when I play again, the space will be filled again and I will have to make more room again.

But thanks for the tips guys! :)

Strange, that I didn't notice this post of yours before now. :confused:

"AA" = "Anti-Aliasing"?

FRAPS! Yes, you're tight! Err, right! I was just noticing!

Anyway, FRAPS is why I'm here again! Aha! Now I know why, or rather, remember why, I disabled the in-game method and prefer FRAPS, when registered. BMP files are bigger and fill up hard drive space faster and then require changing them into JPEG files, and thus are more tedious. So FRAPS is my preferred option. :)

Hate to bump an old post but I did a search and found this to be the most complete thread.

I've changed my .ini file and in game hit CTRL/PRT SCRN and get the message that "screenprint0.bmp has been saved".

However, I can't find any picture file in any of my Oblivion folders (using Vista).

Any idea on how to find them?

@Ragin Cajun,
I'm not precisely sure what could be causing your problem since I run XP instead of Vista..
But I can tell you that if you have AA turned on you can't take screenshots the .ini way.
Also, which .ini are you modifying? There are two and you need to edit the one in: My Documents>My Games>Oblivion

Since I use Bloom+AA, I employ Fraps for screenshots. The more basic version is free and it does a great job.

Thanks dragon..I did modify the right one. However, I have no clue if I'm running AA. Whatever is default for a Windows machine with Vista..lol. I don't need to do them, just wanted to try to put up a screen shot of the new mannequins that Fable put up.

When you fire up your game, go to "Options" and then "Video" (all in-game).
Scroll down and eventually you'll see a setting for Anti-Aliasing (AA)... That should tell you if it is on or off.

It's just one person who created that mod, if it's the one I'm thinking of, and that would be Fable ;)

Yes, it was Fable...couldn't recall in my daze yesterday and was too lazy to bail out of my reply to double check. :D

Under options, the Anti-Aliasing is off.

Heh... I've done things like that :D

Anyway, regarding your screenshot problem.. I really don't know what else to suggest. It may be a Vista thing, but as I said, I don't run it, so I really can't say for sure.
I stick to my original recommendation... download Fraps. It works great and using it is actually easier than trying to simultaneously hit "Shift" and "Print Screen" because you can program it to use any key you want. (I use "Pause Break" which is just above "Page Up.")
