Is it possible...

To do an ironman game, from The Start of Baldur's Gate 1 to the end of ToB, on the Hardest difficulty, as a mage.
No cheats. Yes, I know, It CAN be done, but, has anyone actully done it?

Can you have a party or do you have to go solo? if you get to have a party it's not even close to difficult for the most experienced players.

He means no party.
I know it's possible to beat SoA and ToB with a mage, as I've done it.
About Baldur's Gate, I'm not sure. However, you could use the tactics described in wise grimwald's non-violent playthrough at the last fight.
Currently I'm playing a gnomish Illusionist/Thief, so I'll be sure to let you know how it turns out. Just for you, I won't use my thief skills for the last fight.
Every part until then is definitely doable by a properly played mage however. That I know from experience.

by "iron man game" I assume he means no saving so if you die it's game over.

Yes, that's correct also, but if he wasn't soloing, it wouldn't really matter what class he'd play.
I'm pretty sure that any character can solo, as long as the have Algeron's Cloak.
