Alternate quest-related dialog from Mulahey(Spoilers)

Here's something interesting I found out (after playing this for some eleven years), while going through the game as a gnomish Illusionist/Thief. If you charm Mulahey, and talk to him, he will admit to you that his kobolds have poisoned the iron and killed several miners.

Here's the full dialog:

"Mulahey- I am your humble servant Mulahey. I exist only to please you. My operations have been going very well here. I have been causing all sorts of trouble among the miners. My kobolds have poisoned all of the iron and have killed several of the miners. What else do you ask for?"

This causes your journal to be updated:

"When we charmed Mulahey, he told us that his cobolds had contaminated most of the iron in the mine, and had killed several miners."

This may not be new to some people, but to me it was. As I didn't find anything regarding this on the forums, I decided to share it with all that are interested.

In general, for new players or those that didn't know, when you charm someone and talk to them, their dialog will be different.

If you charm the bandits at Larswood, they give you this dialog:

"Bandit- "I'm a bandit who works fer the Black Talons. From what I gather, we get paid by the Zhents. Though I have to say this: the guys who come to give us orders don't look like Zhents>"

This yields the following journal entry:

"The low level grunts of Black Talon mercenaries believe that they've been hired by the Zhentarim to stir up trouble along the Coast Way."

In the same area, you can charm Teven (the bandit who reveals or takes to the Bandit Camp). He provides this dialog:

"Teven- Me name's Teven. I've served the Black Talons fer about 3 years now. I've been giving orders to disrupt the flow of iron through the region. That's all I really know."

This yields the following journal entry:

"When we charmed the bandit named Teven, we learned that he works for the Black Talon mercenaries. The Black Talons have been raiding the Coast Way. They have been ordered to target iron caravans."

At the Bandit Cap, you can charm Taugosz Khosann (leader of the Black Talons) for the following dialog:

"Taugosz Khosann- I am Taugosz Khosann, and I have killed 10 men with a single stroke of my hammer. Though many of my men think we work for the Zhentarim, that is just told to them in case they are captured. In reality we are paid through Tazok by the Iron Throne. They want us to disrupt all iron shipments coming into the region."

Ardenor Crush can also be charmed, but his dialog is almost identical to the previous one. The main difference is that the introduction states that he is the leader of the Chill.

Quite intresting. It goes to show how well thought-out the game is. I never use save-or-die/save-or-defeat spells like charms, because enemies have a tendency to save. (With me at least.)

This was actually done with Algeron's cloak.

Mulahey usually doesn't make the same, though this is the first time I've actually bothered to talk to him.

I think utilizing the cloak in early game, especially when soloing, really helps increase the speed at which you progress.

But yeah, I was surprised at that. I's a shame that Baldur's Gate II only had a single (I think) occurrence as to where charm makes a difference, that, and that you can no longer talk to those charmed.

Very sweet find. :D
I'm about to replay the Saga with Ascension in the end first time.

I'll try this.

รด_o had no idea that the dialogue changed with charmed creatures. Never did try talking to them (even as a bard with graegans harp :P ). Thanks for the tip!

Do I take it that this is playing vanilla BG as I am pretty sure that in Tutu you cannot have a dialogue with a charmed creature?

I am most impressed. Whilst I have finished the mines without my party using violence. (I charmed Mulahey and allowed his summoned creatures to kill him) this is even better.

It's a pity that you can't play a non-violent game in BG2.

I am playing Baldur's Gate with Tales of the Sword Coast installed. No mods.

Aye. There are too many "kill to advance" type scenarios.

BG is full of this stuff. I once went through all the dialogue files with Infinity Explorer and it took ages :P

Tutu stops you from talking to charmed creatures. Does anyone know of a mod that gets this dialogue back?
