Rampaging Smileys on MSN

For some time now, I think it is because of the new version (Windows Live Messenger), I have been attacked by uncontrollable smileys when using MSN.

I'll be typing and emoticons will automatically insert themselves into my message without my actually having selected them.. On many occasions I can't even get rid of the damned things...

I know several of my MSN contacts have this problem, but I'm wondering if anybody else here has it as well. And most significantly, has anybody found a fix? It's really irritating... especially when somebody has told you something serious and you can't get rid of the big grin emoticon that keeps inserting itself in your response..

Trillian is a good fix.

Runs MSN, YIM, AIM, and ICQ, and never screws with smileys.

I am using the new Live Messenger as well but I have yet to encounter this problem when typing. It crashed on me once, but nothing else happened after that.

I'm still trying to get rid of the original ones I must say. But have you tried clicking the smiling face, then proceeding into 'show all emoticons' as that is the place where you should see a whole lot of them. Then just click ones you don't want, and you should be able to figure out how to get them out of the equation, or how to change the passage of text that summons them henseforth on your own.

Yeah, I got the same problem. I don't have the newest live messenger thingy either, so it isn't a new "feature". :p

I believe you can deactivate that by going to 'extra' in you msn-screen and then by going to 'options'. I believe you have to go to something called 'messages' where you can deactivate use of smileys and such.

Indeed
Tools -> Options -> Messages -> Show Emoticons

Won't stop the recipient from seeing them obviously :x
