Elven Fighter

I'm wondering what's the best course of action: learning the Armour spell (Fastness of Body?) and wearing Leather armour, or ignore the spells and go for the heaviest armour possible?
The rest of my party are Rhulana, Gladys and Forgrimm.

I suspect going with Fastness of Body is better. There's a lot of good leather armor in the game, especially for the main character.
