v1.22 causing game to not start?

I have been playing through the original campaign for the first time. I was towards the end of Act 2 and recently downloaded the newest update. Since that update, the game will not start. The launcher screen comes up fine, but when I hit play it shows the NWN2 logo but then the game never launches. I tried reinstalling, and after that it worked fine, but I couldn't load my saved game (because it was a later version.) I then tried updated the game again and the same problem reoccured. What might be causing this and what can I do about it? I suppose I could try to reinstall and only update through the version prior to 1.22, but any other ideas would be appreciated.
