Multiplayer help

I have no clue how to get this working. I've been trying for both BG1 and BG2 and it works on neither. I want to start a game with my brother. We both connect to the same wireless Internet. One of us hosts the game, but then the other gets the message that says joining failed. The IP address is a 192.168.#.# one.
I didn't know if it was necessary since we both use the same Internet, but I forwarded the ports 2300-2400 and 6073 anyway. Was this necessary? And are those the right ports? Like I said, I want to play either BG1 or BG2. I have the expansion packs and the right official patches. Any ideas how I get this working?
I've searched Google and looked around various forums for a solution, but I don't know enough about this stuff to know which of other peoples' problems apply to mine and which don't.. so I decided I had to make my own post on it. Thanks for any help.
