Grand Mastery *Spoilers*?

Have a few questions about Grand Mastery, which I don't know anything about.
1. How many proficiency points do you have to have in any one weapon?
2. What are the advantages you gain by becoming a Grand Master?
3. What level do you have to be to become a Grand Master.
I ask this because I remember some one suggesting to me, (when I was working on party creation) that if I planned to dual-class one of my fighters to a mage, make sure he/her was a human, had 17-18 Strength, and 18 Intelligence and wait until my Fighter was level 9 to get the Grand Mastery.
Which now that I think about it that answers question 3.
What I have not done is put proficiency points in one slot. I put 3 in Axes and spread the others around. I guess I've screwed the pooch as they say.
So I was wandering if the Grand Mastery thing is worth starting a new game (Party now in Severed Hand) or just wait and correct this in the next playthrough.
Thanks
Sonny

Here's how proficiency affects the combat skill
+ no attack penalty
++ +1 to hit +2 damage +0.5 attacks
+++ +3 to hit +3 damage +0.5 attacks
++++ +3 to hit +4 damage +0.5 attacks
+++++ +3 to hit +5 damage +1.5 attacks
Warriors get 4 proficiency points at the start (can't put more than ++ in a weapon at sthe start however) and 1 every 3 level. For level 9 fighters it's possible to have +++++ in a weapon.
There's no need to restart. The game isn't so hard that there's only one way to beat it. Others have have played pure mages without any fighter benefits at all successfully, the pregenerated characters don't feature dualclassing stats either.
If you don't like spellcasting you can even continue as fighter without dualclassing to mage, the mage can handle it.

The only one I have in my party that can cast mage spells is my Bard. That's why I was going to dual the one fighter to a Fighter/Mage
Thanks for the help.

If it bothers you, you can use Dalekeeper to edit your savegame. It's about as easy to use as they come.

Dualclassing to mage (I'd go the illusionist way) offers more options, but even a bard alone is enough if you prefer physical combat over spellcasting.

Don't know what I did wrong, but after making the changes, and loading the saved game made by Dale Keeper, my character now is a level 8 Fighter and all his stats but one (Charisma) are 3 and Charisma is 1.
The proficiency points are what I wanted. Must have done one thing right.
Any thoughts on what I did wrong. Only thing I have loaded is IWD, HOW, TotL and G3 Tweak Pack.
I guess it's hard to teach and old dog new tricks

Never happened to me, and I use the Keepers frequently. Do you remember if Dalekeeper loaded your Fighter that way, or did he become that way after saving?
Good news is that you can keep trying, since your original save shouldn't be affected.

It loaded him that way, in fact when it loaded all the members that way. I do get a error message before I try to open the character file.
Think G3 Tweak pack could have any thing to do with it?
I'm going to try it and I will post the error message I get.
Thanks

You're editing them via character file? Have you tried editing the savegame?
The error message probably has something to do with it.

When DK first opens up I am given the choice to pick a saved game, then it takes me to a screen where I have a filefolder, SB etc.
When I click on the folder I get the message "Seek failed on an unnamed file", then it takes me to the characters, there are no names and all stats on all characters are are at 3. They all do have all the equipment they have in the game.

Just noticed that when I get the list of saved games, there is nothing in the little box to the right, it's blank.

Very strange. Normally, you'd be able to open the savefile and edit that. Have you tried reinstalling Dalekeeper?

Yea, stuff like this only happens to me:laugh:
Yes I re-loaded DK twice. I goggled DK and I seen on Scorcers Place forums that there seem to be a conflict with G3TP and DK.
So I went to the DK site and posted in their forums. We'll see what happens.
You know, it's not really a big thing, but when something like this happens, the stubborn in me has to get to the bottom of the problem
I'll keep you posted

Got an Answer
Thanks to plainab over at the G3 forums, got it (DK) to work.
Apparently DK was intended to be used with IWD, and does not recognize the items form HOW that become available in IWD with G3 TP loaded. Solution:
Have all your characters drop all their items on the ground. Make a new saved game. Use DK to edit your characters, then load the saved game created by DK. Then pick up your items.
Or just play IWD with out HOW loaded, but make sure you have the latest patch.
Tried it. It worked. Plus it gave something to do for the last 3 hours

Strange. I always install HoW rightaway and DK never gave me problems. Anyway, glad it worked for you.

Yea, and a lot of people said the same thing as you. And I believe all of you. But it would not work for me. Then when I read the post in G3 forums, I tried what she said and it worked.
I still would like to know why it works for some and not others?
Anyway, as usual, thanks for the help.
