spells vs spell-like abilities

ok, here's my problem.

mate of mine took a prestige class that had prerequisite: "must have the ability to cast summon monster 4"

he entered this class using a feat that gives him summon monster as a spell-like ability

I claim this is a illegal build on the acount of semantics because you have to have the ability to CAST it (spells are CAST, spell-like abilities are USED)

I showed him thread on wizards.com that clearly says that SL abilities are not spells, but still he wants more proof, and our DM is unsure of it all, so I beg of you, mighty users of the Internet to cast final vote.

thx

Spell like abilities are, in every way shape and form just a different name and way of casting a spell, but it IS a spell. They are affected by spell resistance like most spells, they have durations and areas, and they use the same spell descriptors, in all ways they are in fact spells.

If you have the ability to cast summon monster four via wizard, sorcerer, cleric, or even spell like abilities, you do meet the PrC criteria of "Must be able to cast summon monster four." Casting and Using are, in almost all cases of the D20 system the same thing, but for spell like abilities you do actually cast the spell like a normal spell.

What's the PrC you're looking at btw?
