One question about companions

Hello.
I've a question regarding companions. Let's say that I've a full party (six toons), and i meet some NPC that potentially can join my party. What happen? Do I get the choice of joining him/her? Do I get a warning at all?
I'm afraid that if I keep a full party I'll loose some good companions that I don't know yet.
Also, if I put some items on a barrel or so, do they disappear after a while? I've a bunch of books that I don't want to loose
Thanks for reading, and sorry for my lousy english :X

When you invite them to join you will then be asked to remove one of your party, you will be presented with icons for each member of the party, including the new person and you then select which one you want to remove. The selected person then leaves, taking all their equipment with them, excluding quest essential items. Therefore you should always save before taking on a new recruit, join them, remove an existing member, have a look at the new person's character sheet and decide if you really want them. Then reload your saved game. If you want the new character, then you have to decide which current member you are going to remove, distribute all their equipment you want to keep, then join the new character and remove the chosen one. Be vry careful though, you will likely never see the character you remove again once you confirm that they are to leave.

Thanks, that was really helpful

I don't know about barrels, but you can put your extra items in a drawer in an empty room of an inn, and they won't disappear. That's where I stock all my extra fire/acid/ice arrows.

There is a house in Berigost were the guy will let you rest for free. It has 3 chests in it that i find great as a place to stash things early on in the game.
PS: i wouldn't worry about saving wands and potions as you get so many throughout the game that you just end up with piles of them. It took my quite a few playthroughs to figure out that I should be using that stuff pretty liberally.
