"Worth it" is kind of a subjective term. Everyone has a different opinion of what that means. That said, I don't find that sorceror builds play well with most other classes.

I used to think that every character should have a level or 3 of rogue, just because I hate dealing with locks and traps. But the sorceror has Knock as a level 2 spell and Find Traps as a level 3 so it really isn't necessary. Putting a skill point each in Open Locks and Disable Traps will hold you over until the spells become available.

Paladin is sometimes suggested as a compatible class with sorcerors, because they both emphasize CHA but I find that the playing styles are much different. Spell casters and tanks don't mix well.

When I play sorcerors I usually add levels of Red Dragon Disciple for all the extra abilities points. If you play through the levels (as opposed to creating a 40 level character from scratch) get the first 2 levels of RDD at level 6 to beef up your strength, then wait until you get your first 9th level spell (which will be at character level 20) before adding the remaining 8 levels. This allows extra fighting ability at a time when you are still fairly weak (and the strengh adds to your carrying capacity for more equipment and loot) but doesn't severly restrict your spell casting.

On the other hand if you are focusing on DEX based fighting, the RDD levels won't do much for you unless you really want the wings. :p
