IWD 2 freezes

Cheers mates! As you can see, I'm new here, and I joined mainly to post this thread.

Right so I'm currently playing IWD 2 and got to the Shaengard Bridge battle, and the game freezes in ~ 1 minute.I've installed the latest patch (2.01), and changed a little the settings, since at the beginning the game had terrible framerates, lagging as hell. So, I'm playing it on 32 bit, with all 3 software blt's deselected, 800x600, 999 (the maximum) cache size, and all the rest of the graphical settings turned to at maximum.
My pc specs: Win XP Sp 3, 2 gb ram, dual core 2.40 ghz, Winfast px 9600 gt 512 vram.
I'm enjoying the game so far so I don't really want to quit it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

999mb cache?

999mb cache?

Try setting it to default and see what happens.

Infinity Engine games sometimes require work-arounds with newer computers, especially with Nvidia cards in and around the 8000/9000 series.
You might try checking the sticky thread posted at the top of this forum, maybe you'll find some tips that will help.

Good luck, and welcome to Game Banshee :)

First thing I did was check that forum, did some long googling before posting on any forums, believe me. I'll try reinstalling the game, see if that works.

Oh and thanks for the welcome, tho I hope I wont have to post topics like these in the future, with any luck

L.E.: nope, I still get the same error after re-installing. Any ideeas?

lol! :D

*sigh* I wish I could help you, and I was really hoping you'd be able to find something in the one forum. However, I encountered almost exactly the same problem when I was running IWD2 a couple of months ago. After extensive Googling the only thing I found was a post somewhere about using a virtual machine and running the game from there. I briefly considered that solution but I don't think I'm techie enough to pull it off. Instead I just went and installed IWD 1, which actually works fine.
If you feel confident though, you could see about giving it a go. :D

I've reinstalled the game, applied the latest patch and applied the nvidia fix, which makes the game look and work perfectly, without any "lag" or the sorts.I've loaded the autosave before going to the bridge battle, moved around for ~ 2 minutes and it worked fine, but when I go to the battle, after the short cutscene, when the bugbear orders the bridge to be destroyed, the fight begins, I start ordering the party-members, and in like 20 seconds, the game either goes in a sort of freeze-huge lag spike, or the error occurs. I'm thinking it's my cd's fault, and that I should go search for another copy.

Thing is, what you are describing is identical to my own experience, right down to the exact time and location of when the problem occurs.

I've owned the IWD games a long time, and I played all of them (including IWD2) successfully on my old computer (a P3 with an FX series card).

Thus, I suspect it is an issue with my new machine..

Well, in any case, I just started a IWD+HoW playthrough (never finished how), so I guess I'll try tweaking IWD 2 later.Oh, and just one last question: might the problem be because my party leader has a custom portrait? It sounds pretty stupid but that's all the questions i have left.

lol! Well, no doubt people will disagree with me, it's all subjective after all, but I think IWD+HoW is the better game anyway. This is probably one reason why I gave up trying to get IWD2 to run..

I suppose anything is possible, but I know I didn't have a custom portrait for my lead PC when I had my problems..

Anyway, good luck!
If you have any questions or issues with IWD1, don't hesitate to post in the IWD1 forum here, and if for some reason you are feeling brave (: D), check out the Speak Your Mind area, it's a general chitchat forum.

Well, I've just installed both games, made a party which fits my tastes (roleplay purposes + a little bit of powergameing), cranked the graphical details to the max, and so far so good.Oh and I just remembered about Trials of the Luremaster, which is free from what I've seen. I'm actually quite excited about this playthrough, since I barely know anything about HoW, and nothing about TotlM, except it has puzzles and riddles, which are, again, "befitting my tastes" (as an Ultima fan :D ), and since the IE crpgs are some of my favorite of all time.
Anyways thanks for the help, I really appreciate it, and I hope my next posts are in a thread started by someone else :D .

Oh and now that I've mentioned it, if I just started my game with a party, and I installed TotLM, must I restart my playthrough to play the second expansion pack?

LE: Actually nevermind, since TotLM is a HoW expansion, and I've read that the best time to play HoW is after you finish the OC, so that wont be a problem.

It was just a thought.

Anyways, since you're playing IWD, ToTLM is the final patch... so it's extra content, but it's treated like a patch. You can go to HoW in the main game through that one house in Kuldahar, but you have to be at least level 9.
