weapon damage vs. melee skill

howdy.
another newbie question. one of my guys found this axe which has +1 to melee skills, but a lower damage number than the weapon he already has. With all the carnage going on in battle, 6 different characters all blowing stuff up, etc, its very difficult to tell which weapon is actually better.
any way to calculate? How does "melee skill level" translate into damage points? Or does it?
thanks

Your melee skill does not add damages, it only raise your chance to hit.

OK, thanks, good to know. Question is, I assume its better to land a blow with a smaller weapon, than to miss with a bigger weapon. How much of an increase of "to hit" to you get with a +1 to melee skill boost?

I completed the game, and never cared about Melee bonus item. Your skill always raise fast enough hit anything you are fighting.

Yes, if u only have one figther !!
With more fighters sharing the enemies, they wont increase as fast in melee, and perhaps it could be problematic.

It is true that I soloed the game, but at first I had a game with 7 characters, 3 of wich where melee. This game went up to the end of the ice cave, and all the character had decent xp.
In this game, the more character you have, the more health the monsters have, so it make no big difference. I actually recruited npcs and left them in town, so that monsters could have more health. More health=more xp.

Did you use the plink and run strategy the whole game or something?
Either hitting with a bow or spells then when they got in melee range run back... repeat and rince?
Cause it does seem like there's ALOT of monsters to deal with at once around the point of the first town. I'm new so I haven't gone farther but the camps right outside town seem like they would be ROUGH to deal with all of them at once. Even with the 2... 1 melee and one ranger they offed my meleeman quick. I used a potion once but gave up once he dropped health almost as fast as he gained it. So I let him drop and solo'd them by plinking and running.
I have to say the only thing I think it DUMB about this game is that you can cast and shoot arrows from melee. In reality, if there ever was such a thing, I wanna see a mage do all the hand gestureswhile a big axe/sword is wizzing by your head
Well, I wanna finish this game as fast as I can and see everything it has to offer so I think I'm going to try the plink and run technique
