Sockets for all

I just completed the first quest in LoD, go me! 
Well, I got this reward, the abilty to put sockets into any item of my choice. Now that's really nifty and all, seeing as my stash is full of runes... But now I'm a bit afraid I might screw something up and kill off one of my good items. Here's the question: Can I put sockets into a set, rare or unique item? I don't wanna lose my good items just because of such a stupid mistake...
